SMART VICTORY IN SPRINT Concentrate’s St. Leger WITH ideal weather, racegoers flocked to Ellerslie in thousands yesterday and the attendance for the second and concluding day of the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting was estimated at 25.000.
r Governor-General, Sir Charles I Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fer- | gusson, were present, and on arrival were welcomed by Sir Edwin Mitchelson, president of the Auckland Racing Club. Proceedings did not start off at all well, from the betters’ point of view, an outsider in Respirator (tenth favourite) coming home and returning a dividend in the vicinity of a score. This constituted a record price for the day, but other good returns were made by Desert Glow, Mangani, Subdivision (second) and Stormy. Prodice and Toxeuma having ran promisingly on the opening day, and Concentrate having been brought up especially for the event, the G.N. St. Leger Stakes provided a race of more than average interest. Concentrate was favourite, and his staying powers won for him. The returns on the totalisator for the day amounted to £79,761, against £85,179 10s on the corresponding day last year. The grand total for the. meeting amounted to £151,511 10s, and this in comparison with £171,945 last year, shows a decrease of £20,433 10s for the meeting. Descriptions of the racing, with detailed results, are as follow: Nelson Handicap Backers received a shock at the outset of proceedings, the despised Respirator (£256), returning his jubilant supporters a dividend amounting to just over a score. Black Maire j (£1,264), was favourite, but Indolent (£1,263), Len (£1,205) and Maori Boy i (£1,044) were also strongly supported. When they had settled down Air King ; was making play from Black Maire, who was clear of Good Boy, Arch i Queen, Catapult and Respirator, and with the exception of Arch Queen, who dropped out, this was the order in : which they raced through the cutting. ] Black Maire went up to Air King at the home turn, and this pair led into the straight closely attended by Good Boy, Diamond Queen, Catapult, Indolent (badly placed early) and Respirator. The lastnamed tackled Black Maire at the distance and finishing strongly went on to score by threeparts of a length. Good Boy was third three lengths back, just in front of a bunch which included Bahama, Indolent, Brampton, Len, Thurnus and Diamond Queen. Victoria Handicap Eaglet was made a firm favourite, carrying £1,682, with Gemlight £1,117 and Gaj’ Duke £975 next in demand. When they had settled down Pellette and Awamutu were on terms just ahead of Monalof, Gemlight, Flying Prince, Carl Idem and Eaglet, j Awamutu and Pellette led round the ; turn, attended by Gemlight, Eaglet, | Plying Prince and Monalof. A sterl- ! ing finish eventuated, Gemlight lastI ing long enough to gain the decision j by a head from Eaglet, who beat Gay Duke by four lengths. Flying Prince I Avas a fair fourth, followed by Awa-
mutu, Pellette, Alotere. Taurua and Bennie. St. Heliers Hurdles This was a good betting race, with Komak carrying £1,839. Odin £1,308, Clockwork £1,262 and the winner, Roman Abbey £ 997. On settling down Tlighilown had charge from Roman Abbey, Polyphemus, Komak and Clockwork. Komak fell at the second fence and nearly brought down Clockwork, whose rider was hanging round the horse's neck and he had to be pulled up. Seven furlongs from home Roman Abbey took charge and was three lengths ahead of HighfioAvn, Polyphemus, Salamander, Master Doon and Odin, in a well-strung-out field. Roman Abbey was still doing it nicely in front nearing the home turn, and led into the straight three lengths ahead of Highfiotvn, who Avas a similar distance ahead of Odin. Roman Abbey had no difficulty in Avinning by five lengths from Odin, who came from a long way back to get second place, a length ahead of HighlioAvn. Polyphemus Avas a poor fourth, with Harbour View and Master Doon a long way back. Autumn Handicap
Corinax Avas a firm favourite carrying £ 3,490, the next best choice being White Fang £1,745, and Hyde Park £1,583. Desert Glow carried £865. Passing the stand Ti Tree and White Fang filled the role of pace-makers, followed by Eager Rose, Hyde Park, Desert Gloav, Corinax, Royal Doulton, j Queen Arch, Iq the Shade and Papatu. , Queen Arch improved her position moving down the back, while Hyde Park was replaced by Desert Glow, that being the only material alteration. The field commenced to bunch crossing the top and at the turn White Fang had a slight advantage over Desert Gloav, Elyde Park, Ti Tree, Eager Rose, Corinax and In the Shade; A fine finish eventuated, Desert Gloav finishing in game fashion to score by threequarters of a length Avith Hyde Park and White Fang in second place, the judge being unable to separate them. Corinax was close up fourth and after him came Ti Tree, In the Shade, Royal Doulton, and Eager Rose. Autumn Steeplechase Little separated the first three favourites, Star of the East carrying £1,629; Pendennis, £1,621; and Kawini, £1,512. Mangani, who carried £sll, paid double figures. When they passed the stand the first time, Pendennis and Mangani were 3ut in front from Potoanui, Kamehameha, Beau Cavalier, Star of the East, and Clockwork. Pendennis was checked going along the back, and at the hill the first time Mangani had charge from Potoanui, Star of the East, Kamehameha, and Pendennis, with Kawini a long way back. Mangani Avas still bowling along nicely in front when they passed over the stand double, and he was closely attended by Potoanui, Star of the East, Clockwork, and Kamehameha, who were all in a bunch. There was no change in the order as they raced down the back, and at the hill the second time Mangani was out six lengths clear of Potoanui. Star of the East (who was tiring badly). Clockwork, and Kawini, Avho had moved up fast at the hill. Nothing had a chance with the leader in the last half-mile, and he Avent on to win easily by four lengths from Potoanui, who just cut Kawini out of second place by three-quarters of a length. Uralla was fourth, and then came Clockwork, Star of the East, Pendennis, and Beau Cavalier.
G.N. St. Leger This was a one dividend race, Concentrate carrying £2,740, Prodice £2,667 and Toxeuma £1,647. When they settled down Te Money had charge from Toxeuma, Prodice, and Concentrate. Te Money and Toxeuma were on terms as they turned into the back stretch closely attended by Prodice and Concentrate, who were also on terms two lengths clear of Lucy Rose. Half a mile from home Prodice ran up ahead of Concentrate and Te Money, and joined Toxeuma in the lead. There Avas little separatnig Prodice, Toxeuma, and Concentrate as they turned for home, and the last-named, shooting up on the rails, outstayed his rivals to win by a length and a-half. Toxeuma was half a length ahead of Prodice, with Te Money six lengths farther back, and Lucy Rose tailed off. Huia Handicap Aussie was installed favourite with C 2,713 and Vallar £2,139 and Lady Quex £1,805 were next. The second horse, Subdivision, carried £2lB and gave a nice double-figure return. Vallar assisted by number one marble hopped out smartly and piloted Kingfield, The Begum, Lady Quex, Marble King, Aussie and Subdivision across the top. Lady Quex replaced The Begum, this being the only change as they turned for home. In the run to the judge Vallar gave nothing else a chance, and won with something in reserve by a length and a-half from Subdivision, who surprised by running into second place. The Begum Avas three lengths away, folloAved by Kingfield, Aussie, Royal Tea, Marble King and Some Lady. Islington Handicap Llanore was a firm favourite, carrying £2,281, with King Lu £1,402, and Le Choucas £1,113 next best backed. Stormy carried £B7l. and High Pitch £782. King Emerald was left, Llanore leading out from High Pitch, Stormy, Sir Russell. King Lu, Mithra, and Sleepy Sol. Llanore and High Pitch Avere on terms at the cutting, attended by Mithra, King Lu, and Stormy. Llanore and High Pitch were still together when they turned for home, Mithra and King Lu also being prominent. Llanore retired beaten in the straight, and in a desperate finish Stormy gained the decision bv half a head from High Pitch, Avith King Lu three lengths away. Le Choucas was close up fourth, followed by Lorient 11., and Master O’Rorke. NELSON HANDICAP Of £400; 1 mile. 10— RESPIRATOR (J. Punch), b g, by Tea Tray—Freesia, syrs. 7.2 (car. 7.Si), H.
