; VICTORIA WINS ATHLETIC SHIELD BY TWO POINTS AN EXCITING FINISH (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. It was only on the final championship event, the relay race, that Victoria College won the athletic challenge shield at the New Zealand University track and field meeting to-day. With 13 of the fourteen events that count for the shield over, Victoria College and Canterbury College were level, with 13* points each. The relay race counts two points for first, and none for second, so Victoria, by winning the relay, finished two points clear. Otago j scored nine points, and Auckland onlv three. Auckland did not score any points ! for the shield until the afternoqp. when i O. Morgan made a fine effort to catch 1 E. K. Eastwood, of Victoria College, in j the final of the furlong. Morgan and ! P. C. Minns had drawn the innermost lanes. Eastwood led right down the j straight. Morgan battled on very J gamely, to suffer a close defeat, but j Minns, who finished third, had no j chance with either. MORGAN WINS HUNDRED Morgan ran a very good race in the 100yds. He shot out of the holes very quickly, and kept the lead, to win by just under a yard from Goodson, of Victoria College. Wooller, of Auckland, finished third, a foot behind Goodin the events decided in the morning, Auckland took a seat far back. ! J. H. Jenkin did not compete in the shot putt, and J. Peacock. Auckland's other nominee, could not do better than 30ft Sin, which was 15 inches worse than the best putt of the fourth man. Watt was outclassed in the mile. Morgan’s best jump in the long jump was 19ft 6in. G. McLeod finished third in a field of five in the 440yds hurdles, but apart from Ransom, who won as he liked, it was a mediocre field. Auckland was not represented at all in the 120yds hurdles, run in the afternoon. Watt found Harley and Webber much febo good for him in the halfmile, in which Harley beat Webber by eight yards, and broke the record. Minns finished three or four yards behind the second man in the quartermile. Allen did not get into the first three in the high jump, failing to clear sft Ransom and Askin went on to sft 6in, but failed to clear that, and after coming back to sft s!in they divided the points for Victoria College and Canterbury. There were several events in which Auckland was not represented at all. The track was rather dead after rain, but the weather was excellent.
