MT. EDEN RESERVOIR
REPAIRS WILL NOT BE EXPENSIVE THREE STORAGE UNITS The city engineer has lost no time in getting ahead with the repair of the burst reservoir at Mount Eden. Plans for its reconstruction were approved at a meeting of the City Council on Thursday evening. jyj\A.K.LNG good the damage Is- not expected to be expensive. It is proposed, beside renewing the fractured southern wall, to erect a party-wall in the new reservoir so that the water accommodation will in future be divided into three units instead of two. This will mean that when cleaning or repairs have to be undertaken only about one-third of the total storage need be out of use instead of twothirds, as it would be with the larger reservoir as previously intended.
From the party wall a new floor estimated to cost £SSO will belaid over the old floor back to the temporary brick wall. The party-wall will cost £1,240. When this is finished the old reservoir can be brought into use again.
With the completion of the new reservoir the old one is to be subject to a thorough testing to ascertain whether or not there is any leakage. “It should be understood,” said Mr. Bush, “that the provision of the new 1 party-wall has nothing to do with the collapse of the southern wall of the old reservoir, but is desirable in view of the large amount of water used on the higher levels, as shown by the waterworks superintendent’s latest return.”
