After 1,900 Years

Old Roman Galley Uncovered CALIGULA’S PLEASURE CRAFT (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) ROME, Saturday. After more than five months of pumping at Lake Nemi the poop of Caligula’s galley has been revealed. Italian flags were hoisted on it. The timbers of the galley are well preserved after nearly 2.000 years* submersion. It is hoped to recover the endeeper in the centre of the lake. The pumping out of Lake Nemi, which is situated in the crater of an old volcano. 17 miles from Rome, was begun at the instigation of Signor Mussolini on October 22, 1925. Cains Caesar, surname cl Caligula, was Emperor of Rome from A.D. 37 to 41. He was eruel and extravagant. He had a number of pleasure galleys, richly furnished and decorated, on Cake Nemi. After Caligula’s assassination in A.D. 41 these gallevs gradually sank to the bottom of the lake.
