AUCKLAND SETS HURDLE FOR VICTORIA COLLEGE

VISITORS IN BAD POSITION Setting a hurdle of 270 in its first innings in the annual match between the Auckland and Victoria (Wellington) University Colleges, the local side has dismissed six of the opposing batsmen for 98. Auckland had 101 on when the match was resumed on Saturday, and even scoring by the remainnig batsmen made the total quite a useful one. Lunn cam© to light first with a good 36, scored chiefly in his partnership with Hudson. The latter scored 25. The advent of A. M. Matheson saw things brighten up with several bigbits. He did not last long after the luncheon adjournment, however, being caught o Tripe for 26. A good ninth-wicket partnership was provided when Clarkson and Cooper became associated. Both from junior ranks, the pair scored freely. Cooper became particularly aggressive, sending Tripe for a six, and scoring three fours. A feature of the innings was the even scoring. The individual tallies were as follow: 41, 36, 32, 26, 25, 21, 20. 17, 16, S not out and 7. Of the Victoria College bowlers. Tripe was most successful, taking five wickets for 84 runs. DISASTROUS OPENING Victoria opened its first innings disastrously. losing H. Osborn off the fourth ball of Clarkson’s opening over. Mackenzie opened with a boundary off Matheson, and soon reached double figures. A three off Clarkson saw him bring the side’s total to 20. The second wicket fell at 29. Mackenzie alone was making a stand, but he, too, fell to Garrard’s trap, sending up an easy catch in the slips. A valuable partnership between Dormer and Tripe ensued, until the former lost his wicket shortly after tea, cleanbowled middle stump by Garrard. Tripe went lbw to the Auckland captain for 26. When stumps were drawn for the day, Victoria had six down for 98.
