Struck Rock in Fog

RUGBY, Sunday. ; DURING a dense fog' the 17,000-ton Anchor liner Transylvania, when approaching Cherbourg after a six weeks’ Mediterranean cruise, struck the rock of La Coque, oft* Cape de la Hague early on Thursday morning.
'J'HE accident was attributed to the exceptionally strong currents prevailing in this particularly dangerous portion of the Normandy coast. The vessel had 300 passengers aboard. She sprang aleak and began •to list heavily, and assistance was summoned. By jettisoning 500 oils of oil fuel, and bj r skilful handling, the Transylvania was able to make Cherbourg Harbour without help, and without any injury to passengers or crew. Per-
feet order was maintained and the resource of Captain Erskine was highly praised by all on board. It was his last trip in command of Transylvania, and he was due to retire on reaching England. The Transylvania is practically a new liner, having been built in 1925 at Glasgow, which is her port of registry. Tier exact displacement is 16,923 tons. She is 552 ft long - , 70ft wide, and 30ft deep. The harbour of Cherbourg- is about 15 miles from Cape de la Hague, where the vessel struck.
