CHAMPION’S PASSING
GRIME NEARS END OFF HIS CAREER FAST AND CLEVER LECKIE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY, Sundav. The boxing contest between Geckio and Grime, which took place last night, showed Leekie as the faster and cleverer contestant. His hurricanelike blows reached Grime from all directions whenever the latter came up from his old-time crouch. The crowd sensed the passing of a champion, as, apart from the fifth and seventh rounds, in which the Australian had rather the better of it on points, the New Zealander piled up his tally steadily. Grime was cautioned in the eleventh round for butting, and later accidentally landed an illegal tap, but Leckie, after a moment’s pause, offered his gloves, and the bout proceeded. The last three rounds saw Leckie fighting like a demon, but the Australian was tough, and lasted until the fourteenth, when the ,New Zealander’s punches told the tale. A right to the jaw sent Grime down for nine. He got up, but was immediately floored. He got to his feet again at the count of six, only to be dropped once more. The police then intervened. The exchampion was badly punished.
