GRIME BADLY PUNISHED
SYDNEY PLEASED WITH BOUT In a thrilling: contest. Johnny Leckie, leather-weight champion or' New Bealand, defeated Billy Grime, ex-triple Australian champion, on a technical knock-out in the fourteenth round. The Australian was sent down three times. An excellent broadcast of the contest was heard from 2BL, and IT A rebroadcast the second half of the bout. .Reception at first was not very good, but it improved as the right progressed, the last two rounds coming in vividly. The announcer stated that the tight was one of the best seen in Sydney, and Leckie excelled in ringcraft and footwork. The New Zealander weighed in at Bst ll£lb, anu Grime at 9st. From the first round Leckie became aggressive, and repeatedly forced Grime to the ropes, although he had to take a deal of punishment as well. Both suffered cut eyes, and, although handicapped. the men kept fighting with
undiminished vigour. Leckie forced the fight, but Grime spoiled his own work to a large extent by clinching, and the referee was kept busy. The announcer stated that up to the thirteenth round the score was fairly even, when Leckie scored frequently to his opponent's jaw, Grime concentrating on tho body for a knock-out blow. As he went to his corner, Grime appeared to be tired, although up to then he had fought well, without showing ill-effects to any great extent. When the bell for the fourteenth round clanged, Leckie leaped from his chair and went straight into action. After some short exchanges, the New Zealander scored with a right to the jaw, and Grime went down for nine. On rising, Leckie landed again, and Grime went to the canvas, to rise at six. When he was dropped again, the police intervened. The announcer’s voice was in the din ot cheers and applause which followed the ending of the contest.
