COLTS BEAT VETERANS - , .*- - bad playing conditions, two batsmen scored well when Colts beat Vetenans by 27 runs in the Suburban Cricket Association’s match at the Domain on Saturday. For the Veterans. Bob Innes knocked up 67 and. for the younger players, Edmunds hit out vigorously for 65. So wet was the pitch that the game, postponed from Friday, was not begun until just before noon. Veterans went to the create first and Elliott was batting promisingly when Matthews bowled him at 17. Nothing impressive in the way of scoring was seen until Innes got into his stride and smote all round the wicket, soon passing his half-century and giving the Veterans a much-needed boost. Drives and leg-pulls were especially well done by the it, .but *E. ■ Watkins: bfh't him at last with a .ball, which did N »ot’rise.
Such experienced players as Alec Kerr, Dunning, Stallworthy, Dickson, Candy, Cooper and Robertshaw were at a loss on the rain-soaked wicket, and could not reach double figures. Matthews, Hollis and C. and V. Williams were the most effective bowlers. Near the end. Stewart made a valiant stand 'for the Veterans and scored a valuable 24. Apart from the work by Innes and Stewart, the Veterans were fortunate in scoring 147*
Colts* chances of overtaking this score under the conditions were not altogether favourable. But the younger players set a better batting standard, taken aU round. six men reaching double figures. Smart running between the wickets was a feature of Edmunds's play, and his score of “Go was popular with the crowd. With Stewart (IT) he passed the Veterans’ total when eight wickets had fallen. It was the old Australian intOr-State player, Alec Kerr, who took the bowling honours. Tricky breaks brought him four wickets, Stallworthy securing three, and Anderson two. • /. Much sounder batting brought Colts thoir wip. , . / Details:
