LINKMAN SURPRISES IN CUP BAD DAY FOR FAVOURITES (Special to TUE SL'XJ HAWERA, Sunday. Tlio Hawera Trotting Club’s annual meeting opened yesterday in cold but tino weather and before a large uttendance. The turf was in good order. although the course had been well drenched. The totalisator handled £ 18,507, an increase of £505 over the first day last year. Aurora Handicap Te AV'ahia was a hot favourite for ! the Aurora Handicap. but he lost 1 ground at the start. Xgahuia. second i choice, began like a rocket, leading ! past the stand from Jasper, (Jang Awa : and El Direct. Along the back Te ; Wahia showed speed to run in behind i Xgahuia and Gang Awa, with El | Direct close up. This was the order , into the straight, where Te Wahia | challenged, but Xgahuia finished strongly to win by two lengths from ' I tho favourite, with El Carbine half a i length away third. Great Delight fin - ! I ished well up fourth, followed by Gang . j Awa and Jasper. Matapu Handicap ' The favourite. Ben Bingen, gave a poor display in the Matapu Handicap, ’ finishing practically last, but backers making Eva Reta second selection had • no cause for uneasiness. Kennerley’s . mar© led from start to finish. Leo Mauritius, beginning well, was in see- \ ond berth at the stand behind E*. i , Reta, with Audo Spray and Call Boy handy. Along the back Audo Spray " headed Leo Mauritius, and Call Boy ; moved up fast, with Alton Brook prominent. Audubon Child. Hawera Cup The favourito selections in the Grand Light-Evelyn Locanda bracket, the Explosion-Kohara bracket, and Great Peter, failed badly in the Cup race, in which Derby Lynn tried to win from end to end. With u round covered Derby Lynn was showing the way to Linkman, Carmel, Sir Author and Roddy. Crossing the top Derby Lynn was still the pilot, with Linkman, Sir Author, Roddy, Zella and Evelyn Locanda all handy. Derby Lynn was first to turn for home, out Linkman was putting in good work, ! with Roddy and Zella conspicuous. In I a great finish Linkman got up to win by half a length from Derby Lynn. Manaia Handicap Etta Cole was a sound first choice for the Manaia Handicap, but her backers were uneasy for a time. Beginning slowly she lost her position, and when the stand was reached was almost last, Bright Light being in front at this stage from All Peters, I Dipnoi, Anseline and Peter McKinney.

Dipnoi broke and when the bacii stretch was reached Bright Light was still piloting the field from All Peters and Anseline, with Etta Cole next. At the home turn Bright Bight was still in front, followed by All Peters. Anseline (who broke), Kolmar and Etta Cole, and once straightened up tor home the favourite came through to win in a hard finish by a neck from Kolmar, with Peter McKinney a similar distance away. Then came Anseline and All Peters.

Normanby Handicap Outsiders in Silver Link and Lady Jewel cleared out from the Held in the Normanby Saddle Handicap and gave nothing a chance. Passing the halfmile disc Lady Jewel was two lengths in front of Silver Link, with Our Patch a similar distance away. Lady Jewel led into the straight from Silver Link, Our Patch and Joy Bird, and in the run to the box Silver Link came away to win by tv/o lengths from Lady Jewel, with Our Patch the same c.*tance away third. Next were Hit*' Sea, Joy Bird and Bingen King. President's Handicap After two good performances in running second at Thames and in the iirst race to-day, Te Wahia was allowed to start at a false price in the President's Handicap, and won all the way. With half a mile gone Great Delight was in the van from Te Wahia. Lightfoot and Arachne, but going down the back Great Delight was at the head of affair's from Lightfoot, Te Wahia and Hostess. Te Wahia was first to the turn for home from Great Delight, Arachne and Bell Dial, and in the run to tire post Te Wahia did best to win nicely from Wakefield, who came trorn the clouds. Hostess was third and Grand Light fourth. Eltham Handicap Carmel was elected favourite in the Eltham Handicap and gave his backers a good run, eventually finishing third. Cora Tacks, third choice, was always well placed and driven a good race by Broughton won well by ha,lr a length from the little fancied High faea. Carmel was early in front, followed by Cora Tacks. High Sea and Admiral Lock, while Derby Lynn failed to go oft' smartlv. The favourite led into the straight from High Sea. Cora Tticks. Richore nnd Grand I-igrlit, out in the run home Cora Tacks came awav and won by hair' a length from High Sea, with <V#iel a similar distance away third. Rlchoi I Grand Light.
