FEILDING WINNERS
STAR AREA’S HANDICAP SPRINT TO THE RAIDER
(Special to THIS SIS’ FEILDING, Saturday. The autumn meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club was opened to-day in fine weather after steady rain last night, the track being in excellent order. Speculation was brisk, the machine registering £31,610, as against £30,521 on the corresponding day* last year, an increase > of £1,039. Kawa Hurdles Locarno was at a very short price j in the Hurdles and he duly won, but j only by half a length from Red Bank j who was rather impatiently ridden, j But for which he might have won. Royal Acre was a fair third and Airtight, Fair One and Onward were next. The | first-mentioned jumped indifferently. ! Onga Handicap Inflame tried to win all the way in the Ongo Hack Handicap, but once landed in the straight Richfield soon gathered him in, while Cool Mint later put in his claim. Richfield was in front inside the furlong post and finally won ; in a. canter by two lengths, with Cool J Mint a head in front of Inflame. White j Ringlet, Bank Note and Fee Simple | , were close up. The winner put up a j most impressive performance. Manchester Handicap Star Area was a pronounced favourite in the big event, the Manchester I Handicap, which was a fine betting race among the other five runners. JoyBird set a muddling pace over the early part from Star Area. Briar Root and ! at the home turn Star Area was with Joy Bird t and also coming well out were 1 Orazone and Merry Damon. At the ’ distance the favourite was being ridden, | and he held his own from this out to i score decisively by half a length from Orazone and Merry Damon, both of ’ whom were indifferently ridden and ; might, have done better. Joy Bird was right up fourth, just in front of Briar Root. The winner did his job well and in any field just a bit below top class will always have to be inspected. Maiden Stakes
Malahat was a pronounced favourite and won the Maiden Stakes narrowly’ from the two-year-olds Oral and Gambler, with Some Rose, W arzone and Clover Leaf at the head of the
remainder. They" were not a good lot. | but Malahat finished well. Onepuhi Handicap Thrift failed to run on in the One- j puhi Hack Handicapi She was going I nicely with Calamine at the home ! turn, and then Kawliakina came on , the outside, while Atliolspear got | through on the rails to win by" a head , from Kawhakina, who was a length in front of Calamine. Thrift was a good i fourth and Aurora Borealis next, the latter losing a lot of ground at the j start. Mangaone Handicap The Raider was favourite in a fine betting race in the sprint. Ho led from barrier rise and was never troubled. Dobbin. Benzora and Iveddar were two lengths behind him at the home turn, and Dobbin got to within a length and a-half of The Raider at the post, Benzora finishing on only a neck away. Keddar was fourth, and should improve. Royal Damon and Limited were al.so right up and the former may be benefited by the Taonui Handicap There was a mild surprise in the Taonui Hack Handicap). Royal Black scoring at nearly a double-figure price. \ Whisogne, Royal Black, and Desert Lad were on terms turning for home, and ] Royal Black took charge at the dis- I tance. Warfille challenged, but the ; outsider was holding her at half a i length advantage as they’ passed the judge. Acred looked likely" at the half distance, but stopped then, and was a
j couple of lengths back third. WhisJ ogne. Fatearoa and Desert Lad were all handy to Acred at the finish. Halcombe Handicap Manly was a very hot proposition in the concluding race, the Halcombe Handicap, carry-ing £1.704, or three times as much as the eventual winne Jeannette. The latter led all the way. slowing the field down badly" in the first half-mile. She and Sovena led across the top and into straight from Discourse, and Manly, and was never troubled, to win by two lengths from Vivo, who was a length in front of Manly*. Next were Discourse and j Sovena. ! Results are:— " Kawa Hack Hurdles, of £150; I’. miles. :—1 Locarno. 11.9, A. McDonald, if 2 Red j ! Bank, 9.9, 2: 4 Royal Acre, 10.3, 3.
