Great Racing
FINE FINISHES AT ELLERSLIE
Stirring Easter Handicap Contest
TIIJE Easter Handicap, the big race at the opening of the A.R.C. autumn meeting on Saturday, was a splendid contest all the way, and it was fitting that the winner should turn up in Bright Glow. But this fine struggle was oulv one of several, for the day’s sport at headquarters was of the best.
Heavy rain prior to the opening event gave the impression that the gathering was going to be marred to some extent, but. however, fine weather was experienced throughout the day, the only unsatisfactory element being a strong south-westerly wind. The dramatic defeat of Supremacy in the Champagne Stakes —he was not even in the first three —and the hollow fashion in which Prodice won the Great Northern Oaks, were features of the racing.
The totalisator investments during I the day amounted to £71,750 10s. Compared with the sum handled on the corresponding day last year, this represents a decrease of £15,015. Notes on the racing, together with details of results, follow: President's Handicap There were several defections in the j opening event, the President’s Handi- i ! cap, and, as expected, most money was , i found for Toxeuma. the three-year-old I carrying £2,323, as against Queen j Arch (£1,294), Hyde Park (£1,092). : All got away nicely to a splendid start, | Toxeuma leading past the stand closely i attended Ly Sleepy Sol, Eager Rose, | Desert Glow, The Dover, Hyde Park i and Wenday, and but for Hyde Park i slightly improving his position there ■ was little material alteration in the i next three furlongs. At the half-mile ! post Eager Rose was out two lengths clear of Toxeuma and Sleepy Sol (together), this pair being attended by Hyde Park, Sir Archie, Desert Glow, Queen Arch, Corinax and The Lover, and this was the order into the straight. Eager Rose hung on in game fashion, but Hyde Park and Toxeuma had too much in reserve, the former going on to score by two and a-half lengths. Eager Rose was third, three lengths away, and then followed Corinax, Queen Arch. The Lover. Wenday, Sleepy Sol, Desert Glow, Sir Archie and Glenstar, who was allowed to ease up. G.N. 9aks Prodice was a hot favourite, carrying £ 3,550, with a big drop to Lucy Rose, £1,487, and Llanore £1,473. When they settled down Kawainga had charge from Mon Star. Gold Winner trained by owner. Onehunga. j Won by two lengths, five lengths between second and third. Time. 3.53 2-5. I Money, Lucy Rose, Prodice, Llanore j and Te Money, that being the order I as they passed the stand. When
they turned into the back stretch Mon - Star ranged alongside Kawainga, and j this pair led Gold Money, Prodice, { Lucy Rose, Llanore, and Te Money. Prodiee took charge at the half-mile peg and led Kawainga, Gold Money, Llanore, Te Money, Lucy Rose and Mon Star, that being the order as they ! turned for home. Gold Money put in a challenge, but Prodice went on to win easily by four lengths from Gold Money. Te Money was eight lengths away third, followed by Kawainga, | Llanore. Lucy Rose and Mon Star. Brighton Hurdles The public entrusted Kilburn, £1,491, with pride of place. with Kawini, £1,432, and Wiltshire, £1,026, next in demand. The winner, Clockwork, which carried £234, paid over a score. Clockwork assumed command at the start and led Kilburn. Beau Cavalier, Ramblin’ Kid, and Wiltshire. At the end of just over a furlong Beau Cavalier fell on the flat and brought down Ramblin’ Kid. Clockwork was out four lengths clear of Odin. Kilburn. Wiltshire, Kamehameha and j King’s Guard and Glenotus passing I the stand. Moving down the back Clockwork increased the lead and was six lengths ahead of Kilburn and Ivawini and -this pair was followed Odin and Wiltshire. The order into the straight was unchanged and though Kilburn .attempted to overhaul Clockwork after jumping the last fence the leader went on to win by two lengths from Kilburn, with Kawini. five lengths away third. Wiltshire was fourth and then came Karamu, King’s Guard and Kamehameha in a heap. Easter Handicap Vallar was the public’s fancy, carry- , ing £ 2,330, with . Bright Glow £1,966. and Reremoana, £1,069 next best backed. Mervette carried £ 595. As expected Vallar soon took charge, and when a furlong had been covered was attended by Ivingfield. High Pitch, Flying Juliet, Reremoana, King Lu, Bright Glow and Mosque. Moving across the top Vallar was clear of Kingfield, Flying Juliet, Reremoana, King Lu. Bright Glow and Mervette in a well strung out field. Vallar was coming back to his field at the turn where he was attended by Kingfield, Reremoana, Flying Juliet, Bright Glow, King Lu and Mervette. Bright Glow came through when they were straightened up and went on to score nicely by half a length from Mervette, who finished very fast over the last two furlongs to cut Kingfield out of second place by a neck. Flying Juliet was fourth. and then came Royal Doulton. White Fang, Mosque and i Reremoana. Champagne Stakes
The popular selection was Supremacy (£3,715) with Gay Ballerina (£2,264) and Eaglet (£1,221) next in demand. Polyxena was the first to show out from Gay Ballerina, Eaglet, Gemlight and Supremacy. At the cutting Polyxena had charge from Supremacy, Gay Balelrina and Eaglet. Turning for home Supremacy and Polyxena were on terms from Gay Ballerina and Eaglet. Gay Ballerina went on to win by two lengths from Polyxena. with Eaglet a neck away third. Then came Supremacy, Monalof and Gemlight. Mangere Steeples The best supported horses were Star of the East £1.906, Master Arch £1,409 and Vexatious £1,144. Going up the back the first time Star of the East had charge from Master Arch, Uralla, Vexatious, Potoanui and Polyphemus. Passing over the stand double Star of the East was still at the head of affairs, with a three lengths’ lead from Master Arch, Uralla and Vexatious, who were all on terms, followed by Potoanui and Polyphemus. There was little alteration until coming to the hill the second time when Star of the East had an appreciable lead over Vexatious, Uralla. Master Arch and Potoanui. who were well strung out. Once over the fence on the hill Star of the East went ou* from his field and had a considerable load when the last fence was readier: Ho went on to win pulling up by li lengths from Vexatious, with Uralla half a length away third. Sir lengths back • as Potoanui and then Master Arch with Polyphemus tailed off.
Onslow Stakes Most support was 'accorded Motere with £2,232, Currajong, £1,519, and Pellette, £1,359. The winner, Bennie, who carried £199, paid over a quarter of a century. Lady Suzanne was the earl} leader from Awamutu, Currajong, Pellette and Plying Prince. Crossing the top Lady Suzanne had the advantage over Awamutu, Pellette, Fairy Belle Currajong, Bennie and Flying* Prince who were all in close order. Awamuti: was the first to turn for home followed by Lady Suzanne, Praetor. Bennie Currajong, Pellette and Flying Prince A good finish resulted in Bennie gaining the decision by a nock from Praetor who beat Flying Prince for second place by a neck. Taurua was fourth and then came Pellette, Motere and Fa iry Belle. Eden Handicap Black Maire was installed favourite with £2,122, while Indolent carried £1,419 and Good Boy £1.083. Envoj carried £Bl7 and paid a fair price When they had settled down Justify and Indolent were on terms ahead ol Envoy, Brampton. Black Maire Bahama. Whakama and Good Boy There was no material change in the order, but as they turned for home Indolent headed Justify, while Envoy also put in his challenge. Brampton Standfast and Some Lady were alsc prominent. Envoy* finished strongly to win by three-quarters of a length from Indolent, who came again aftei retiring beaten. Some Lady was ; neck away third, and then came Brampton. Standfast and Thurnis. Results are as follow: PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP Of £600; 1J miles 3 HYDE PARK (X.
