The Great Easter
TO BE RUN ON MONDAY
Silver Paper Is Fancied
WHITE most of the Easter carnivals commenced to-day, the C.J.C. autumn fixture does not open until Monday, to be concluded on the following day. A review of the first day’s fields at Riccarton is given below.
The first item on Easter Monday’s i ropramme is the KILDARE HURDLES With but six acceptors there will be ; dearth of runners both days. Two j lat will be well supported in their ngagements are sure to be TROILUS RAN GAT AH I. CHAMPAGNE STAKES The two-year-old classic has drawn n indifferent field, and without the ; rilliant Pink Coat it would be a poor! ffair altogether. Outside of this really mart youngster Desert Song, First loney, Disorder and My Own have [ hown some speed. The best backed air will no doubt be PINK COAT FIRST MONEY AUTUMN PLATE There will be the usual big hack elds in action at Riccarton. In this vent the acceptors number 13, which s not so many as hitherto. Form oints strongly to Paper Boy. Winome Boy, The Viscount, Starshooter, liss Mercia (who failed on the West 'oast recently), Phastar, Hurly Burly
and Amourette. Of this bunch the favourites may be WINSOME BOY THE VISCOUNT RUSSLEY PLATE The second-class youngsters arc catered for in this race, although some of them could well be in the earlier classic. Indeed, no less than four do figure in the Champagne Stakes. Francolin, First Money (if started here), and similarly Desert Song and Duellona, together with some promising material in Juniper, Belcaire, Auda and Stately, should assist in making it an excellent contest. The most favoured pair will no doubt be FIRST MONEY JUNIPER. GREAT EASTER HANDICAP Of course the position is really dominated by that smart sprinter. Silver Paper, who must be very hard to beat over the seven furlongs. He won with ease at Trentham recently. ;?nd it would not be surprising to find him nearly an odds-on fancy. Out-
side of this fellow there are good ones in Cimabue (who reads particularly well at the weights), Booster, Rin Tin
Tin, Meadow Lark, Royal Saxon, Amor, Papercliase, Seatown (apparently treated as a stayer now), and j Great Star. It is quite a good field, , and perhaps it is a pity that the smart ! three-year-old so dominates the posi- I tion. The favoured pair should un- j doubtedly be SILVER PAPER CIMABUE. SOCKBURN HANDICAP Three of this number, seven, claim an engagement in the Great Easter Handicap, but probably Silver Paper will scare them out of the short race. This will be an excellent forerunner to Tuesday’s mile and a-half Great Autumn Handicap, in which Seatown and Pink Note are engaged. However, on recent showings it is likely that the best backed will be CHIDE SEATOWN COURTENAY HANDICAP This will bring to a conclusion the first day’s racing. It is not a good field, but it is rather trappy to sum up. Perhaps there will be plenty of money forthcoming for the chances of SILVER COOT BUOYANT For the second day, on Tuesday, there are two important events to come up for decision. A few lines about these races will not be out of place. GREAT AUTUMN HANDICAP An acceptance of eight only for a contest of this description can only be regarded as most disappointing. Rapier and Nightmarch will not lack friends, and the former is not at all badly treated. Hoylake is costly these days, but Pink Note is working well. Count Cavour is down in the weights and if the track is soft will play a part. Beau Geste has been in winning vein of late, and Seatown and Amor are in very light. However, it is going to be hard to light on one to head off the topweights. RAPIER NIG H TM ARC H CHALLENGE STAKES Quality rather than quantity is the predominating element in this seven ' furlong classic. It should be a great tussel between SILVER PAPER PINK COAT
