ACTIVITIES OF LOCAL FIRM HAS FAR-REACHING EFFECT In the great effort being made by ‘Dominion manufacturers to supply 10 > v Zealanders goods fashioned by N'rvr Zealand labour from local products. arl thus retain the >vhole cycle of business m this country, the boot and shoe industry is always to the fore. An outstanding example is furnished by the Auckland firm of G. A. Coles and Company, .Ltd., who have the largest boot factory in Auckland, and who woi k on the policy that wherever possible they themselves support local industry. This applies particularly to Now Zealand leather, which they use exclusively lor soles and for the heavier footwear. HUDSONS HAVE BEEN MAKING THE SAME BRAND FOR 60 YEARS The duality of New Zealand biscuits made as they are from pure New Zealand milk, butter or flour, is excellent, and that this is recognised by a discriminating public is evident by the magnificent factories and the huge number of operatives employed in this trade. Foremost in the manufacture of biscuits is the old established firm of lfudsons. who for over half a century have had as their policy—“to make ou goods and service so far excel that they be considered the standard by which all others are judged." This ideal has been amply realised with their famous “Wine" biscuits, a beautiful biscuit, than which there is no better made. AN ENORMOUS BUSINESS

CHEMICALS AND FERTILISERS Established over half a century ago, Kemptliorne, Prosser and Cos N.Z. Drug Company has for many years occupied a foremost position anion" the great commercial and industrial concerns of the Dominion. The foundations of the business were laid by the late Mr. T. W. Kempthorne in 1863 and the early expansion of businc > revealed the necessity for the m«*=t economical production of many of the goods handled. After 1879 a pharmaceutical factory was built and equipped with the necessary plant and machinery for manufacturing. Several years later the building was replaced by the present fine structure, wherein medicinal products such as tinctures, essences, compound tablets, pills, etc., as well as household, toilet and proprietary preperations are manufactured on a large scale, by a complete and up-to-date plant, under the direction of highly-qualified experts. Among the many manufactures of the company are the well-known • Westfield” manures, high-grade superphosphates. fertilisers, suphuric and nitric acids, and chemical manures 01 all kinds. From the standpoint of local industry, the products of the company's factory are of prime importance, as their manufacture and sale afford employment to a large number of men and women. These goods cover a wide scope, ranging from toilet articles to veterinary medicines, and are in most eases, such as “Extract of Malt” or Life F-ia.lt. marketed under registered trade-marks—the device of the “Kiwi” or the letters “K.P.”. High standard of quality has obtained , for them a wide sale throughout the : Dominion. In its extensive operations, the company is not surpassed in magnitude by any industrial concern of similar character south of the Line, and its i success and progress has ever been . coincident with the prosperity of New 1 Zealand.
