CLEAN WINDSCREENS

NEW SERVICE FOR MOTORISTS Motorists who park their cars in Melbourne streets found recently that i still another “service” had been devised to add to the cost of bringing a car into town. Upon returning to his car a motorist was confronted by a green-coated boy who' politely, but with due impressiveness, informed him that in his absence the windscreen of his car had been cleaned and that a small consideration would not be amiss. As the nails in the youthful cleaner's boots had marked the trail of hi 3 progress over the paint-work of the car, a point-blank refusal was given. In other cases the conversation was something like this: “Who employs you, my boy?” “I don’t know his name, sir!” “How many of you are engaged in this work?” “About 30, sir. Nineteen are on the job to-day.” “What is your charge?” “Oh, 3d or 6d or (hopefully ) anything you like to give, sir.” City Council traffic officers said they had no power at present to stop this new practice, but promised immediate relief when the parking regulations became law.
