OLD RESIDENT PRESENTS CAPT. COOK’S PORTRAIT UNVEILING BY MAYOR The unveiling of a fine portrait in oils of Captain Cook, the famous navigator, was performed in the Town Hall Council Chamber on Thursday evening by the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon. The picture was presented to the city by Mr. Moss Davis, a former resident of Auckland, who has been living in London for the past 20 years. “This ceremony' has been made possible by' the generosity of one who we hold in the highest respect,” said Mr. Baildon. “We have been given many handsome gifts by citizens and Mr. Davis has been one of the most liberal donors. He took a prominent part in the busines activities of the city some years ago and he now lives in London. “We have had many evidences of the warm place Mr. Moss Davis has in his heart for Auckland. His first gift was made in 1921 and since then he has sent many objets d’art to this city for the art gallery and museum. “Each year I have personally sent congratulations to Mr. Davis on the date of his birthday'. On April 3 next he will be 82, and I will also forward the congratulations of citizens.” (Applause.) Mr. Eliot R. Davis, a son of the donor of the picture, thanked the May'or for his references to “my dear old dad.” “Although he has not lived in Auckland for so long his heart will always be in this city',” said Mr. Davis. By invitation,' of the Mayor, several friends of Mr. Davis were present.
