MEDICAL STAFFING

HOSPITAL BOARDS START INQUIRY DOMINION INVESTIGATION (From Our Resident Reporter) WELLINGTON, To-day. Important changes in medical staffing of hospitals may follow i the investigations now being carried out by the executive of the Hospital Boards’ Association. At the recent conference at Palmerston North, Dr. L. Wilson, of Havelock, took advantage of the discussion of surgical training by Sir Lindo Ferguson to table a remit that the whole question of medical staffing should be investigated by the executive, and this is now being done. Commenting upon the issue, Mr. L. V. Iveisenberg, secretary to the Hospital • Board’s Association, stated that data was now being collected, and would bo before the executive at an early date. He pointed out that this was the first general consideration of the question of medical staffing, which, when before the association before, had always been approached from the one point of view—that of remuneration and the employment of honorary staffs. One matter which will be before the association in relation to the question is the relief of medical men at “oneman hospitals.” Possibly a corps of relieving doctors may be created, smaller boards combining to bear the expense, and these doctors relieving medical superintendents in turn. This will overcome the difficulty now presented in country districts* which are sometimes left doctorless in the holiday season.
