HOLIDAY CRICKET
SAWDUST FREELY USED HORSPOOL AND TAYLOR IN FORM The unusual sight of sawdust being liberally scattered round the wickets was an indication of the adverse conditions under which the two holiday cricket fixtures were played at Eden Park to-day. In both the Auckland and North Auckland match and the inter-Varsity game new wickets had to be cut out yesterday, and the playing area was still very soft to-day after heavy rain during the night.
A SOFT WICKET
NORTH AUCKLAND’S INNINGS Set the formidable task of getting 334 runs to head Auckland on the first innings, North Auckland resumed batting on a soft wicket at Eden Park this morning with 19 runs on for no wickets. Play was delayed an hour because of heavy rain early this morning. When only six runs had been added to the overnight score, W. Dunning lost his wicket to an easy catch by Frater at point. Panther and Vipond made a good stand for the second wicket, the pair adding 38 runs by speedy batting until the former hit his wicket with, the bat. He made 31 by fast cricket. At lunch, North Auckland had scored 80 runs for two wickets. YESTERDAY’S PLAY Hitting one sixer and twelve fours in a space of 1£ hours, E. Horspool was the outstanding figure in Auckland’s solid batting display against North Auckland at Eden Park yesterday, the Grafton veteran getting 105 (retired) out of an innings’ total of 333. He was very strong on the leg side, and the slow bowlers were severely handled. Considering that Auckland had been sent in to bat on a wicket which was only cut out on tho morning of the match, its three-century total was an excellent performance. After Horspool had retired, Taylor gave a vigorous display for 72 not out, and Ryon, Guiney. and Hay also batted well. N. Vipond was easily the best of the North Auckland bowlers. Bowling a nice medium-paced ball, he kept practically all the batsmen quiet, and his five for 65 was an outstanding performance. Before play closed yesterday, North Auckland had scored 19 without loss. Details: AUCKRAND. First Innings. SAUNDERS, c W. Dunning, b Vipond 10 FRATER. lbw, b I’.
