NEW MODERN CARGO CARRIERS FOR WEST COAST TRADE ‘ Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. Two new cargo steamers for the West Coast trade have been ordered by the Union Steam Ship Co., Ltd., the contract having been placed with Cammell, Ltd., Birkenhead. These two vessels will embody the latest advances in steamship construction. They will be of 3,400 tons deadweight, 293 ft long. 46ft beam and draw 18ft fully loaded. The speed will be 10 knots at sea. Hand-fired furnaces will operate twin boilers, and provision will be made for the installation of a. pulverised coal plant, if it should be thought desirable at any time to use that form of fuelling. The engines will be situated right aft, and each vessel will be propelled by a single screw. Each vessel will have three masts, carrying four derricks, and serving three holds of two compartments.
