Sleepers Awakened by Roar of Flames
NARROW ESCAPE FROM FIRE OUTBREAK AT REMUERA Awakened early this morning by the roar of flames, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Baggett and their daughter had just time to escape from their burning house before fire blocked their exit. The house, which is situated at 28 Remuera Road, is a nine-roomed, twostorey, wooden building. The lire is thought to have started about 3 a.m. near the staircase on the ground floor and, when the three occupants were awakened, flames were licking the walls of the passage through which they had to go to reach the back door, fire already blocking the front door and hall. Mr. and Mrs. Baggett and their daughter were the only people in the house at the time. They got out into the open and quickly summoned the Remuera Fire Brigade. The house was well alight by then, but the brigade made an excellent “save,” so that only four rooms were gutted. The rest of the house was damaged by smoke and water. The house was owned by Mr. John Daniels, of 9 Omahu Road, Remuera. The furniture, which was owned by Mr. Baggett, was insured in the Royal Office for £2OO. The house was insured in the New Zealand Office for £BOO.
