\T a small country sports meet- ** ing in the North Island recently the winner of the maiden handicap was said, after the race, to have won a race previously. As a matter of fact, he had won a race just a few days before, but by the time the question had reached the ears of the Protest Committee he had collected his trophy and vanished. Said a member of the committee to the starter: “You shouldn’t have 'et that bloke start. Bill, when he hasn’t a maiden.” By the time the indignant starter had finished Pointing out that his duties did not include those of detecting “ringers the other official had wandered off So the starter confided his troubles to a visiting runner. “I d catch ’em if it was my job.” he —}d- “Run. maidens? Huh! Dammit, I won 10 maiden races meself!”
