WAIHI MINES SCHOOL

YEAR’S WORK SURVEYED WAIHL Thursday. The annual meeting 1 of the council of the Waihi School of Mines was held on Wednesday evening, the president, Mr. W. H. Johnston, being in the chair. In submitting his yearly report, the secretary, Mr. C. F. Sims, said there had been a decrease in the number of students attending the classes. In the annual examinations, there were 18 first class, five second class, and six third class passes, making a total of 29, which could be considered satisfactory. In addition, one student, Mr. J. G. Banks, had been successful in obtaining his battery superintendent’s certificate. The balance in band at the end of the year was £ 208 5s ICd, which was slightly better than the previous year. The officers elected for the year were as follow: Chairman, Mr. W. H. Johnston; patrons. Messrs. A. M. Samuel, M.P., and C. E. McMillan, M.P.; president of the council, Mr. W. H. Johnston; vice-presidents, Messrs. M. F. Haszard and J. Gilmour; council. Messrs. W. Morrison, C. Kipgsford, W. L. Button, T. C. Watters, J. G. Cornes, and W. Goldsworthy; students’ representatives, Messrs. O. Bell and W. F. Selling; auditor, Mr. W. M. W'allnutt. During the year, 1,176 samples had been treated in the school laboratory, these including assays for gold and silver, determination of copper, lead, zinc, mercury, and other metals, coal analysis, and many other miscellaneous examinations, the number being a record for the school.
