Busy Afternoon Admitting that in one afternoon h«> had got drunk, breke his prohibition order and used obscene language. Thomas Martin, a fireman aged 53, vpis fined £5 on the third charge at the Police Court this morning. He wan convicted and discharged on the other two charges. * • • Expensive Theft At Methven yesterday William Thomas Ividston. aged 23. was fined £lO. in default one month's imprisonment. for the theft of £lO from a workmate with whom he was living. Ho was also ordered to return the stolen money.—P.A. Hastings Mayor to Retire The Mayor of Hastings. Mr George Maddison. after eight years’ civic service. during six and a-half of which he was Mayor, has declined all reouests of strong deputations to nominate him for a further term, on account private and business reasons—P A. Probation for Theft Admitting last Tuesday that he had stolen £7 lt»s t>d from his employers. C. L. limes and Co., by whom he was employed as a driver. W aiter Eric Harland appeared at the Police Court this morning for sentence- He was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make restitution. Crushed by Tractor While A. McColl. a timber worker at Rakaurou, near Gisborne, was driving a tractor hauling logs, the tractor got out of control- MoColl jumped off but fell in front of the tractor. wj\|r.h passed over one of his legs, necessitating its amputation. A deep was also inflicted on the back of tne skull.—P.A. e e e Thieves Visit Epsom Some time yesterday afternoon intruders entered the home of Mr. A\ illlttm Hardy, of 9 Liverpool Street. Epsom. The residents of the house were absent at the time and the doors and windows had been locked. When they returned in the afternoon every thing was in disorder, furniture being turned over and drawers opened. Nothing of any great value had been stolon. Stolen Motor-cycle A motor-cycle, the property of Mr. J. E. Harris, of 39 Forbes Street. Onehunga. was stolen last evening from outside the Epiphany Church, Newton. The theft occurred some time before 9 o’clock. The missing motor-cycle a Rex Acme, bearing the registered number 31-545. The paint has been scratched off the petrol tank. Relief Finances Low At a meeting of the executive committee of the Wellington War Relief Association. the financial statement showed the total of available funds n t February 28 to be £24,132 11s lOd. It was mentioned that at the present rate funds would only see the association over another five years. Mr. Luke remarked that there might be less unemployment this year and a smaller demand on the fund.—P.A. Hamilton Airway Company At a meeting held at Hamilton last evening it was decided to form a company, to be known as the Hamilton Airways. Ltd., for commercial flying in the district. A De Havilland Gipsy Moth machine has already been purchased. and is being flown from Christchurch to-day. Captain McGregor, who has a distinguished record as a flight commander in the Air Force during the war, has been engaged as chief pilot. • • mm Excursions to National Park Beginning on April 12 the Railway Department will inaugurate week-end excursion fares from the Wellington. Wanganui and Napier sectors to Tongariro National Park. Excursion fares will also prevail from intermediate stations on those lines. An arrangement has been made whereby the railway authorities will issue accommodation and motor tickets with the railway fare, thus relieving holidaymakers of any bother. Ex-Convict’s Frauds Thomas Livingstone, aged 35, a carpenter, stated to have been discharged from Rangiho Prison on March 6, pleaded guilty at Wellington to-day to four charges of obtaining money and goods by false pretences. He opened a bank account, so securing a cheque book. He withdrew his money and then proceeded to issue valueless cheques, the amount involved being £9 17s; but he had further cheques ready for £l3B. The Magistrate said it was obvious that Livingstone came to Wellington intending to embark upon a career of dishonesty. He opened his bank account under a false name. Counsel said accused took his j mother’s maiden name because he did ! not want it to be remembered he had j been in prison. ; Livingstone was sentenced to six months’ impris-’nnunt.—TV A _____
