MR. POTTER WILL NOT CONTEST CITY MAYORALTY FAITH IN BOARD SYSTEM “1 agree that local body problems Potter Mayor of Mount Eden, will not be a candidate for the City Mayoralty. He has consented tc\ a request to be a candidate for the Mayoralty of Mount Eden. In making: his decision. Mr. Potter told The Sun this morning: that he appreciated the support promised in the event of his offering - himself as a candidate for the City Mayoralty. He was not clear, however, that in the interests of local government it would be wise for him at this juncture to accept the invitation. “I agree that local body problems are urgent, and that the rapid growth of Auckland calls for the best services of all citizens.” he said. “At the same time I hold that the solution of many questions which confront us are to be found in the board system. The achievements of the Auckland ElectricPower Board are striking. I hope that something of the same kind will result eventually from the Transport Board. The water supply of Auckland is a problem which grows in importance. Properly handled, these services will provide* for a growth in the number ot small settlers within reach of town, and will help to settle the urgent problem of unemployment. Such boards can be organised as a Metropolitan Board, to the general advan- ( ta Holding these opinions I am not sure that I cannot be of more service in taking my part on the boards and working for their extension. While therefore heartily thanking the many citizens who have offered support and assistance, I niust - peat that X am not clear that it would be advisable that at the present time I should be a candidate for the city.
