WITH THE BOY SCOUTS

Captain Woods, Commissioner for Sea ScoLits, has expressed his delight I at the fine turn-out of the five Auckland Sea Scout Companies at the Vindictive regatta last Saturday. There was an excellent display of scouting spirit and throughout the day a true atmosphere of friendliness prevailed. The items were controlled by naval officers under the direction of Lieutenant Haynes and each Company met with success in the various races, the naval trophy for the whalers’ obstacle race being won by the Hawke Company. * * * Captain Price, Master of the Fame Company of Sea Scouts, wishes to tender his congratulations to the Vindictive Company on the well arranged regatta held last Saturday and also to congratulate the officers and committee whose efforts made for success in this important event in New Zealand Sea Scout history. The boys of the Fame Company desire him to express their appreciation in particular to the ladies who satisfied their expansive food requirements. Captain Price states that he was well pleased with the showing of his own boys at the regatta. * * * Five Scoutmasters undertook a week-end hike to Pukematekeo last Saturday, those who took part being District Scoutmasters Iversen and Dyer, Captain Gee, of Pukekohe, Scoutmaster Slesor, Papakura, and Scoutmaster Abbot, Ley’s Institute. The hike was organised by District Scoutmaster Iversen, and those who attended thoroughly enjoyed the outing. Numbers of troops in the district are now arranging Easter camping expeditions. Papakura will combine with Pukekohe and spend a few days under canvas at the delightful site on Hunua Road that so frequently sees the “white roof-tree,” of the Papakura Scouts, and the Herne Bay and St. Barnabas Troops are making Waimauku their destination. Several hikes have also been arranged. A well-organised pound night was held by the Tahutimai Troop on March 14, when bright entertainments were staged by the various patrols, the Kangaroos carrying off the honours with an Indian sketch. “One Good Turn Deserves Another.” During the evening two new patrols were formed. The patrols stand in the following order in the Burleigh Cup Competition: Kangaroo, Eagle, Tiger, Wolf, Kiwi, Fox. On Saturday, March 16, sixteen members of the troop paraded at Three Kings and eight Scouts succeeded in passing the fire-lighting and cooking tests. Later a game of Release was played, Leader Lancaster’s squad being defeated by the Scoutmaster’s party by two points. Church parade was held at the Epsom Methodist Church on March 17 with a muster of 27 scouts. * * * A meeting was recently held in the Methodist Church Hall, Port Albert, to consider forming a troop of Boy Scouts in Port Albert and surrounding districts. Pastor Cave journeyed from Te Hana to address the gathering on the aims and workings of the Boy Scout organisation and a committee was thereupon formed. Mr. Forrest Reid was appointed Scoutmaster and Mr. Robert Bremner Assistant Scoutmaster. Mr. Cave promised to act as adviser to the troop for the first twelve months. A fund was opened in the Hall to start the movement off in a financial manner and the necessary action was taken regarding amalgamation with the parent body. The meeting was brought to a close with thanks to the chair and to Pastor Cave for his able address.
