AGAINST FOOTBALL TOUR
SOUTHERN UNION OBJECTS “WOULD SPOIL SEASON’’ Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Opposition was shown by members of the Canterbury Rugby Union tonight to the proposal to send a 2s ew Zealand team to Australia in June. “Are we running Australian football?” asked one member. Another said there was an agreement In existence by which the Xew Zealand Union undertook to assist the Rugby Union in.Xew South Wales. The provincial unions had a right to know the text of that , agreement. j The majority of the members appeared to be opposed to the tour, among the reasons advanced being that a tour so early would spoil the whole season in Xew Zealand, and that ;it would add to the already great amount of travelling reqLiired of Rugby | players, and might raise trouble with ! the employers. It was urged also that vt the team must go it should be composed of young players, and not All Blacks who were about to retire from the game. It was decided to write and ask the Xew Zealand Rugby Union to supply the Canterbury Union with a copy of the agreement existing between the Xew Zealand and Australian Unions. The Canterbury Jockey Club asked the union to keep Saturday*, August 17, the day of the Grand ’National meeting, clear of important representative matches. It was decided to refer the question to the delegates to the Xew Zealand Union, whfoh arranges representative fixtures.
