DANGER OF BENZINE
WOMAN’S FATAL BURNS WARNING FOR PUBLIC Press Association HAWERA, Monday. A verdict that death was due to shock following extensive burns was returned at the inquest held this afternoon concerning the death of Eliza Shirtcliffe, a married woman, who died in Hawera Hospital an hour after her admission last Monday afternoon. She was found lying outside her home at Otakeho with her clothes almost completely burnt off her body, which was severely burned from the ankle to the shoulders. She said she had been cleaning a dress with benzine near the copper fire. It was presumed by the police that, after cleaning the dress, the woman threw the cloth used into the fire, the flames from which had ignited the benzine, which had fallen on her clothing during the cleaning process.
The jury added a rider desiring that public attention be called to the danger of using benzine in proximity to lights or fires, owing to its highly volatile nature.
