MEETS WITH ACCIDENT SAME DAY THAT HE LOSES KALOS (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N.. Monday. While running out in a paddock at the training establishment of Airs. Man McDonald, the five-year-old gelding Kalos received a broken leg as the result of a kick from a companion in Peneus. and which necessitated his destruction. Although by no means a big stake earner, Kalos had proved more than useful, and it was confidently expected that he would develop into a good handicap horse. He entered upon his racing career as a three-year-old and filled third berth to General Wai and Molto in the Aorajigi Trial Plate at Feilding at his first essay—a promising enough debut. Three starts intervened prior to his being able to break his maiden status, when lie won the Maiden Stakes at \V oodville from Kilmoyler and Mister Gamp, but before -the season terminated he added a victory over Nastori and Henna at Dannevirke. a success

over Heather Blend and Inner Harbour at Hawke’s Bay. and a second and two thirds. His stake winnings for his initial season amounted to £307. The four-year-old career of Kalos was marked by the usual number of seconds, it being his ill-fortune to fill the role of runner-up on six occasions without being able to actually get on the winning list. His stake winnings for that season amounted to the modest sum of £205 after having been in the money seven times out of his 15 starts. Another Unlucky Period While fortune did not altogether smile kindly »on the chestnut during the current racing term, Kalos nevertheless improved on his earlier record, for, after his running a third and two seconds at the Christchurch Hunt and Grand National fixtures, the Boniform gelding won over six furlongs at Dannevirke on his return. Later on he won over a mile and a-quarter at Woodville and. following his running second to a stable companion in Locarnb in the tSeward’s Hack Handicap on the second day, won the New Year Hack Handicap at Alarton with a regular poultice, 9.13, from Thrift and King Quex —two very useful sorts. During the course of tlie present term Kalos was tried over distances In Cup company, when he showed that he would in all praba.bility develop into a handicap horse of merit. However, these hopes were not to be realised, for the playful attentions of Peneus brought his career to a premature close. By adding £425 to his stake winning total Kalos brought his total winnings up to £937 for his three seasons —an amount which might well have been considerably greater. Fortune’s Wheel

It was the turn of Fortune’s wheel that the very night of the mishap, the owner of Kalos, Mr. C. F. Vallance. should meet with a motoring accident which necessitated his admission to tuospital suffering from injuries to his chest. However, it is pleasing to record that this well-known sportsman is now making good progress.

Top of the List It must be an unusual occurrence for an Australian owner to head the list of winners of stakes at a New Zealand race meeting, though often a Dominion owner has topped the list across the Tasman. Such was the case at the Awapuni meeting, however, where the Australian, Mr. H. G. Kirkpatrick, who has owned Gay Ballerina for but a week, won £ 500 in stakes as the result of the success of the filly in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes and her third place in the Manawatu Stakes. Gascony credited Mr. T. H. Lowry with £450, while Air. G. G. Holmes, owner of the Awapuni Gold Cup winner, Rapier, received £350 and a gold cup valued at £IOO. A Taranaki owner. Air. J. Frederic, was credited with £350 when Seatown won the Tamatete Handicap on Thursday.
