Wairiki Wins Surfdale Shield
IN LIGHT BREEZE gl-übs combine forces Light weather yachts had a day out Saturday, when the Victoria Cruising Club and the Ponsonby Cruising Club held combined cruising races to Surfdale. and harbour races. *" A light nor'-nor’-east breeze prevailed when the programme began at 2.40 and toward the end of the afternoon it came down even more lirhtly. The racing began off St. Mary’s Bay, the dredge Maui being used as flagship. Keel yachts and mullet boats made the trip to Waiheke, and classes from M down to Y competed over courses within the safety of the harbour. Victoria’s chief event was a general handicap contested by the larger boats for the Surfdale Shield. The officers were: Starter. Mr. O. Johnson; judge, Mr. E. Griffiths; timekeepers, Messrs. A. Perkins and J. L. Sullivan. At Surfdale Mr. L. Tercel officiated. CRUISING RACES The keel yachts and mullet-boats were sant away together, and made a picturesque sight. It was one of the best starts of the season, the contestants being well bunched. The order ip which the 20 competitors crossed the line was: Rakoa, Matariki, Wairikl. Lady© Wilma, Starloch, Starlight, Otira, Kokiri. Spray, Wyoming, Waima, Celox, Why Not, Winifred, Mahoe, Mov-ai, Malua. Awatere. Queenie was 15m late and Wairere 16m. Finishing times were: Ladye Wilma, 5.5.16: Wairiki, 5.6.36; Rakoa, 5.17.10; Spray, 5.19.38: Starloch, 5.23.5; Celox, 5.23.26; Queenie, 5.24.53; Starlight, 5.27.54; Awatere. 5.20.16; Valeria, 5.30.1 2; Winifred, 5.31.17; Kotiri, 5.33.17; Waima, 5.34.54; Malua, 5.35.40; Mahoe, 5.35.46; Mowai. 5.41.16; Wyoming, 5.46.37; Matariki, 5.48.21; Why Not, 5.50.12; Otira, 5.52.2. HARBOUR RACES S Class. —The order of crossing was: Sceptre, followed by Atangatai, Sea Sleigh, Cyclone, Mistral and Waitui. Owing to the strong tide and because they got in the lee of the dredge several boats were swept back after crossing. Sceptre thus lost 2*m. On completion of the first round. Mistral had a lead of 5m 19s from Atangatai, which led Cyclone by 10s. Sceptre arrived lm 59s later. Sea Sleigh was next and Waitui seventh and Almira last. In the second round Mistral completely outsailed the rest of the fleet, finishing 20m 22s ahead of Cyclone, which replaced Atangatai. Finishing times were: Mistral, 4.17.26; Cyclone, 4.37.48; Sceptre, 4.38.45; Atangatai, 4.41.53; Waitui, 4.47.58; Sea Sleigh, 4.49.55; Almira, 4.58.21. M Class. —There were four competitors. Manene was in the best position, and hard by were Maratea, Mala, and Mawhiti. At the end of the first round Manene led Mawhiti. Maratea was third and Maia fourth. Finishing times were: Maratea, 4.51.31; Manene, 4.52.8; Maia, 5.54.44; Mawhiti, 4.55.19. V Class. —Ngaire led the way across, followed closely by Surprise, Scud, Wild Wave, Drone and Secret. At the end of the first round Drone led Surprise by lm 10s. The next was Wild Wave, Ngaire, Secret. Scud was well back. Finishing times were: Drone, 4.40.28; Surprise, 4.42.51; Wild Wave, 4.48.45; Secret. 4.55.8; Ngaire, 4.55.18; Scud, 4.57.411 T, X and Y Classes. —There were 14 starters. The order of crossing was: Yal. Joan, Maybelle, Rangi, Manu, Eleanor. Shalimar, Rona, Ramona, Sea Dawn. Jean, Romp, Opah and Caprice 11. At the end of the first round Opah led the Y’s and Ramona the Jellicoe class. Val was in third place. Ramona was in fourth position. Next came Romp, Sea Dawn, Manu, Maybelle. Rangi. Finishing times were: Opah. 4.37.55; Shalimar. 4.40.14; Val. 4.42.32; Ramona, 4.43.44; Eleanor. 4.48.22; Rona, 4.51.44; Marie. 4.53.4: Manu. 4.54.19; Sea Dawn, 4.54.53; Maybelle, 4.55.9: Rangi, 4.56.59; Caprice 11., 5.7.10. OTAHUHU BOATING CLUB SUCCESSFUL AQUATIC CARNIVAL The Seaside Park, Otahuhu. was the rendezvous of a very successful aquatic carnival on Saturday afternoon, hold under the auspices of the Otahuhu Boating Club. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the function, and ' in spite of the strong counterattractions. there was a satisfactory attendance of the public, who showed keen interest in the outboard motor races. This was the first appearance n f the speed boats on the Tamaki River. An excellent course was provided. and some exciting finishes were ’witnessed. Mr. H. Fearnley acted as starter, handicapper. and judge of the yacht race, and Mr. C. R. Wilson fulfilled similar duties in connection with the outboard motor events. - Mr. W.
