GAOL FOR CAR CONVERTER
YOUNG MAN WHO STOLE FROM MATES THREE MONTHS' GAOL 7 Having been convicted on a charge of converting a car to his own use and on two counts of theft, Charles Stanaways, a labourer aged 22, was sentenced at the Police Court this morning to three morths’ imprisonment. Stanaways, according to evidence heard at his first appearance, was found sitting in another man’s car and was caught after a long chase. The car was valued at £l5O and belonged ‘William Hunter. The theft charges were that accused stole £lO 6s od from Ronald Michael Pethe.'ick, at Lake Waikaremoana. on October 12, and £7 Ss 5d from Alexander Johnson. According to Chief-Detective Hammon, Stanaways had been on relief work at Lake Waikaremoana and had stolen the money from a bag in the tent of a fellow workman. He had fled to Napier and thence to Auckland. There was nothing previously known against him. Stanaways was also admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make full restitution.
