Morpeth Makes New Golf Record
A 68 AT TITIRANGI CONDITIONS PERFECT I I’luying brilliant golf on Saturday, a loan Morpeth, the New Zealand open , champion, made the par and scratch i scores at Titirangi look foolish. lie I holed out a 68 to create a course record that is unlikely to be challenged m many a long dav. Morpeth was playing- with A. B. j I eaee, and his card read as follows: j Out. 245. 344, 344—33 j In: 384. 444, 454 35 1 Thu old bogey at Titirangi was 7S and this has been recently replaced by the new system of having a scratch score for the course, this being fixed at 1 5, and being but two strokes more than the par of the course. Starting away with a perfest drive at the first. Morpeth sank a six foot putt tor a two. Only* very few local players aspire to reach the first green with their tee shots. The remainder of his play* out saw scoring in par figures, except at the third, where he was too far with his second, and finally missed a 4-foot putt. A 10-foot putt at the 10th saw a brilliant three recorded, and this was followed by an equally brilliant four |at the long 12th. Play ing sufp. Morpeth. played an iron off the 13th tec,
following with a full brassy which stopped ten feet from the pin and gave another magnificent four. The first real slip was at the short 14th, where Morpeth recorded three putts, and he repeated this at the 17th, but his score was too good to be spoilt by* these two lapses. Conditions were ideal, and everything points to the course at Titirangi being in the most perfect order for the provincial championships, which begin next Saturday with two qualifying rounds, and continue over Monday and Tuesday with match play. AUCKLAND GOLF CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD A year of very considerable improvements was discussed at the annual meeting of the Auckland Golf Club on Saturday. Considerable alteration to the clubhouse, commencement of extensive course reconstruction, and the purchase of new land on which a practice nine holes would shortly be available, were mentioned by the president, Mr. P. Tf. Upton. Mr. S. J. Hanna, club captain, requested member* to postpone criticism of the course alterations until their effect could be seen. Five greens were being reconstructed and rebunkered, and it was expected that the remodelled course would be in play by September. Mr. Hanna said it was hoped during the year to hold a boys’ tournament during the holidays. This tournament would be open to boys throughout the Dominion who were members of recognised clubs. It was hoped that in addition to Auckland competitors, there would be entries from the South. The following officers were elected: —President, Mr. M. AT. Louisson: vicepresidents, Dr. W. G. Borrie. and Messrs. U. Horton and IT. P. Richmond: captain. Mr. S. J Hanna, re-elected: committee, Dr. J. F. Brown, and Messrs. H. B. Lusk. W. S. Ralph.. C. I. Nathan. S. A. Smith, L. W. Delphi auditor. Mr. N. A Duthie.
Eulogistic references were made concerning the services of Mr. Upton and Mr. Hanna. Dr. Borrie said that Mr. Hanna had been prevailed upon to take the position of captain again. It was decided that the entrance fee for non-playing members should be raised from £ 1 Is to £3 3s.
