Bay of Plenty’s Record Meeting
CUP TO QUEEN ARCH
TOWN BIRD'S TWO WINS (Special to THE SUE) TAURANGA, Saturday. Brilliant weather favoured the annual one-day meeting of the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club to-day at llie Gate Pa course. The track was in excellent order, and there was interesting racing in the majority of the events, some of the finishes being very close. There was a record attendance, two special trains bringing a large quota. The meeting was easily the best that has ever been held in the Bay of Plenty, and was well managed in every respect. For the principal event, the Tauranga Cup, the Te Aroha mare Queen Arch was installed favourite, and justified the confidence of her backers. The Herries Memorial Cup was won by Kaha, the well-bred brother to Dermod and half-brother to that onetime brilliant sprinter, Gaillard. After the latter race The two cup winners were led out. Mrs. Newsham presented the Tauranga Cup to Mr. 11. B. Hines, owner of Queen Arch, and Mr. J. N. Guinness presented tfle Herries Cup to Mr. C. Matthews, owner of Kaha. H. Goldfinch rode three winners (Brilliant Light and Town Bird, twice), Forbes two (The Jack Jumper and Spring Abbey), and the following one each: Spinks (Terrapeen), 1.. Manson (Queen Arch) and O. Mclnally (Kaha). The totalisator handled £ 16,236, compared with £14,112 10s last year, an increase of £2,123 10s. Results are as follow: TRIAL PLATE HANDICAP Of £SO; 5 furlongs 9 —TER RAPE EN (A. J. The leading events resulted as follow: CHIPPING NORTON STAKES A sweepstakes of £S each, with £I,OOO added: weiglit-for-age, with penalties and allowances, 11 miles. STREPHON (S. Green), ch c, 3yrs, by Saltash—Soldier's Love, 8.11, including Alb penalty ] LIMERICK fll. A. Knight), br g, oyrs, 9.6, including 71b penalty 2 WINALOT (K. K. White), ch li, 4yrs. 9.7, including 71b penalty 3 Six started. Strephon, who led all the way. was attended in the earlier stages of the race by Loquacious and Jocelyn, with Winalot and Limerick handy. The field closed in on Strephon, who was only a couple of lengths ahead on entering the straight, but he kept his opponents at bay and won comfortably by a length and a-half from Limerick, who beat Winalot by half a length. Loquacious was fourth. Time, 2.7. WARWICK FARM CUP A sweepstakes of £8 each, with £I,OOO added; li miles. KIDAIDES (T. Rosso won by a neck, with three lengths between second and third. Time, 1.403. Limerick's showing at Warwi.-k \ esowner will probably doeide to start him at Rand wick next week. Strcphon's victory was a hollow one, but the pace was slow and llie stewards censured the jockeys.
