Sheep Thieves Busy On Southern Runs
£lO9 REWARD OFFERED THOUSANDS LOST IN YEAR Press Association TIMARU, To-day. South Canterbury runholders complain bitterly of the prevalence of sheep stealing. Mr. S. P. Hope, one of the largest holders in the Mackenzie Country, states that 3,500 sheep were taken from the Sherwood Downs district last year, in one case a flock of 800 ewes completely disappearing. Hope Bros, are offering £IOO for information regarding the thief taking sheep from their Grampians and Whale’s Back stations. Farmers say the thieves raid flocks in remote paddocks or take lots of 20 to 30 in covered motor wagons, and are even daring enough t© cut sections out of long lines being driven from sales. Recent losses include 100 ewes from a paddock fronting the main road at Pleasant Point, 400 Merino ewes from the Whale’s Back station, and 800 ewes from another Mackenzie run. The farmers urge that the Government should give more help in tracing the thieves and that penalties for stealing be increased.
