GOLDMINER’S EYE

SIGHT IMPAIRED BY QUARTZ CLAIM FOR COMPENSATION Stating that his left eye had become totally and permanently useless on account of an injury consequent on a fall of quartz, Alfred Richard Cornes, miner (Mr. P. J. O’Regan, of Wellington), claimed compensation from the Walhi Goldmining Company, Ltd. (Mr. Richmond), in the Arbitration Court this morning. In evidence plaintiff said that, while mining on September 26, 1928, he had been struck on tlie right temple by a piece of quartz loosened by his pick. This injured his right eye and soon afterward his left eye became affected and had since become useless on account of cataract. He Had not earned less than £ 6 a week and claimed a weekly payment of £2 commuted into a lump sum for loss of one eye. While admitting that he had been struck on the temple plaintiff denied he had suffered any injury to his right eye and the condition of the other eye was not due to causes resulting from his work.
