INSIDE A POST
THEN DISQUALIFIED FLAG WAS HIDDEN A strange jockey and a strange horse on a course for the first time are often apt to make some mistake, and an instance of this character occurred at the Strathalbyn (South Australia) races. Joan Hatan, who used to run in Victoria, was having her first outiiig over fences on the trade, which in some places is not fencied in. This caused the downfall of Joan Hatan. The mare jumped like champion all the way, and she won rn a canter, but then the trouble began. Several jockeys saw her accidentally go inside a post when it was only a matter of a stand uyp to win, and the rider of the seeonrl horse protested and the race was tjaken away. It is a long ti/yie since such an incident has occurred in South Australia, and maybe* it will lead to clubs doing their best t» completely fence in all their tracks. Even at Gawler, a metropolitan track, the inside of the steeple course is open at places and the track denoted by flags stuck on poles. At Stratlu&'lbyn sticks were used with red flagps, but the wind wrapped the flag arawnd the pole which was the cause oX the disqualification, and that is probably why the rider missed the correcA course.
