TOURNEY AT CAMBRIDGE

PROVINCIAL CUP CONTEST (From Our Own Correspondent) CAMBRIDGE. To-day. There was a very large attendance at ’’Bardowie” yesterday, when the finals of the provincial and junior cups were played. This afternoon, when the final of the Provincial Cup was played, there was a record crowd, and the spectators were provided with one of the fastest and most exciting games of polo seen in the Waikato for a long time. The finalists were: Cambridge A (Max Garland, T. Hines. A. MacNiool and R. G. Blennerhassett), and Matangi (G. Ranstead, W. Phillips. R. Townsend and V. Chitty). The game, which was even right through, had a sensational finish. At the end of the seventh and final chukka, the scores were five all, and playing extra time, as provided £4® xh( Cambridge after a strei/atees figml cot a goal and the coveted trophy from Matangi, who were last year’s holders. In the opening chukka, Cambrii was the first to score, Garland go. - ing. There was no score in tho second chukka, which saw the advai - take with Cambridge. Early in ti e third chukka G. Ranstead equalised for Matangi, and a little later again found the uprights. Just at the end of the spell Garland equalised for Cambridge. The spell was in favour of Matangi. In the fourth chukka, Matangi took the lead. Townsend goaling. Again at the close of the chukka Blennerhassett came ~ight through for Cambridge, and once more the scores were equal—three all. Play at this stage was very fast, all the players being excellently mounted. Early in the fifth chukka Cambridge took the lead, Hines scoring. Cambridge had Matangi hard pressed for a time and then Matangi got equal again Ranstead goaling. Early in the sixth chukka Garland made a great run for Cambridge, and scored a fine goal, to put his side once more in the lead. The last spell saw some brilliant polo. There was no score until about a minute before time, when Townsend broke clear for Matangi and equalised with a fine goal. Cambridge had the advantage of the hit out in the extra chukka, and put Matangi on the defensive most of the time. After six minutes’ play Hines shot the winning goal for Cambridge, and a great game* ended with the scores: Cambridge, G; Matangi. 5. ‘The final of the Junior Cup was between Cambridge B (A. and W. Fisher, J. Butler, N. Brown) and Waihou B (D. Spence, J. Wight, M. Burke, and G. Goodfellow). A splendidly contested game resulted in a win for Waihou by seven goals to four. B"or the win - ners goals were scored by Spence 4, Burke 2, and a goal was secured through a mis-hit by a Cambridge player. For Cambridge Butler, Brown, A. and W. Fisher scored.
