EAST-WEST AIR MAIL

AUSTRALIAN ENTERPRISE SERVICE TO BEGIN IN JUNE | The first trip on the East-West j Australian mail service will be made | from Adelaide on June 2, returning i from Perth two days later. At first it will be a weekly service | in each direction, but if circumstances ' warrant, this will be increased. West Australian Airways, Ltd., j which will operate the service, has j purchased four De Havilland Hercules j planes, which are expected to arrive j next month. Provision has been made for 11 land- I ing grounds between Adelaide and Kalgoorlie. To permit of night fly ing, there will be* a chain of beacons between Kalgoorlie and Forest, and thence to Adelaide lights will be provided to direct the pilots. The longest interval between the beacons is between Deakin and Cook —B6 miles. There will be two night landing grounds—one at Kalgoorlie | and the other at Forest, 400 miles to j the cast. The lighting arrangements ; for both grounds are most elaborate, j In addition to the beacons, there will be 20 ground floodlights, and the whole of the buildings at each ground will also be brilliantly illuminated. The overseas postal administrations have been notified of the date on which the service will commence, so ; that residents in those countries may ; be able to avail themselves at the out- j set of the accelerated transmission of mails which the service will afford.
