TRADE IN PRODUCE
POTATO MARKET FIRM EARLY SHIPMENTS FROM SOUTH Sun Office, 9 a.m. A very firm tone in most sections, with merchants taking a greater interest in the future position, has been registered in grain, seed and produce circles during the week. A T the moment, Auckland, merchants ; are drawing limited supplies of ; potatoes from Pukekohe, the Manawatu, and the South. The market is j very firm, and spot stocks are oply 1 sufficient for immediate requirement.-, j Odd lines of fair quality tables b # : j still to be picked up in the Pukekohe district, but these are only a neg- j ligible quantity when it comes to coy- j ering the whole of Auckland’s re- j quirements. The same can be applied j to the Manawatu, which is supplying most of the Southern part of the j North Island at the moment. In the j South, the new crop is not quite ready. , and it is not expected that Auckland will be able to draw on there for all its requirements for another week or so yet. The Wingatui, which left Wellington last evening after loading at Southern ports, will bring the first substantial shipment of Southern tubers this season. These will come to a practically bare market, however, and it is not expected that present prices will show much of a reduction until after Easter, when present forward quota - j tions indicate a through store meri chants’ Auckland price of from 8s to I 9s a cwt. ! At the moment, Auckland merchants I are asking 10s to I.ls a cwt., through store, for Pukekohe and Manawatu I potatoes, and up to 12s 6d a cwt. for I Southern potatoes. ' Onion Market Firmer I A decidedly firmer tone in the mar- • ket for onions has been registered over the past few days. This has been brought about largely by an increased ! inquiry for export, giving growers conj fidence to hold for better prices. A fairly substantial consignment is re- ‘ ported to have been shipped in the | South during the week for the Austra- | lian market, while orders have also I' been placed in Auckland for early shipment to those shores. The spot market has advanced fully £1 a ton during the week, and merI chants to-day ask 9s a cwt. through I store. | Little Movement in Cereals
The cereal market is quiet, but steady trading is reported with most lines. Oats are steady, recent firmer rates being well maintained. B Gartons are selling through store, Auckland, at 4s sd, with A’s 3d dearer. Chaff sells at the unaltered quotation of £9 10s a ton, through store, for good, bright samples. The market for wheat is very firm, with supplies in the Sov.Vi strongly held. The outlook for maize is unaltered. With the new crop little more than three months off, the market shows no signs of strengthening. The Southern parts of the province continue to draw their requirements from the Bay of Plenty, while Gisborne is meeting Auckland’s needs at 5s 3d a bushel. Heavy Trading in Seeds The recent rains, which have been fairly general throughout the province, have strengthened the inquiry for grass and clover seeds, and merchants report a considerable increase in actual deliveries to farmers over the week. Fertilisers for autumn top-dressing purposes arc moving out in heavy quantities, merchants still experiences' difficulty in coping with demands for immediate delivery.
