British Boat Damaged But Wins on Points

AMERICA TAKES HEAT SEGRAVE NOT A TRIER f United r.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australia* aud XZ. Press Association} (United Service) Reed. 1 p.m. NEW YORK. Thurs. Major H. O. D. Segrave. in liis motor-boat Miss England at Miami Beach. Florida, yesterday, won thu first 12-mile heat in a race with Mr. Gar Wood, in his Miss America. The American boat was forced out in the third two-mile lap with a broken quadrant, after having averaged aboui 54 miles an hour. Major Segrave finished the heat in 12 minutes S 3-S seconds. Mr. Wood was leading before the mishap. To-day, Miss America VII, entering the final heat of the challenge race, negotiated all six laps far ahead of Major Segrave, averaging approximately 60 miles an hour. Major Segrave entered to-day with Miss England damaged in IS places from yesterday’s race and therefore made no attempt to do more than loaf about the course. The boat developed leaks while doing that. However, on the point system of scoring, yesterday Major Segrave made two points for finishing, while Mr. Wood was unable to finish and scored nothing. To-day Wood won the race for two points, but Segrave finished the course without attempting to race Wood and made one point, totalling three to Wood’s two for the entire race. Segrave averaged a little over 42 miles ail hour to-day, barely creeping in the final lap, for the Miss England was leaking throughout the race. Owing to the sharp curves the attempts on the record will be made on Friday on a straight mile course on the Indian River.
