THEFT OF GUN
MAORI’S UNCONVINCING TALE BOUGHT FROM UNKNOWN MAN (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. The theft of a shotgun was the subject of a charge against an elderly Maori, Moana Mateha, and his son, Bob Moana, in the Pukekohe court to-day. Evidence was given by a farmer, K. J. B. McCardle, of Maramarua. that a shotgun was stolen from a shed. The youth hod been employed at his farm about May of last year, when the weapon disappeared. He identified the gun as liis own. Mateha said he purchased the gun in 1918 from an unknown sportsman residing on the Hauraki Plains. The weapon was seldom used, hence he overlooked registering it. Mr. F. PI. Levien. S.M.. regarded Mateha as the culprit and lined him £3, with £1 14s 9d costs. The charge against tlie youth was dismissed. j
