DAHLIA SHOW

MANY’ FINE EXHIBITS The annual dahlia show under the auspices of the Auckland Horticultural Society was opened at two o'clock this afternoon in the Newmarket Municipal Hall, by the president of the society, Sir Edwin Mitchelson, K.C.M.G. Introducing the president, Mr. F. Walker, chairman of the general committee of the Horticultural Society, congratulated Sir Edwin on the beautiful exhibit staged by him. Other notable exhibits, said Mr. Walker, were those of Mr. G. W. Wright (dahlias), and a display of ferns and begonias by Mr. A. W. Palmer, of Glen Eden. There was also a good display of seedling dahlias by Mr. Harry Goldie. Mr. Walker also thanked Sir Edwin and the Auckland Racing Club for the many beautiful horticultural displays exhibited annually at the Ellerslie racecourse. The reputation of Ellerslie in that respect extended far beyond New Zealand and had led a recent visitor to assert that the Ellerslie racecourse was the finest in the world. Notwithstanding dry we? /I . the year has been a good one iur dahlias, and there are many line blooms on exhibition. The Roberts Shield, which is competed for annually by amateurs in classes restricted to the varieties of dahlias recommended by the Auckland Horticultural Society, was won bv Mr. R.
