Wanganui Club Will Terminate Circuit
TWO DAY FIXTURE RACING APRIL 1 I AND 13 The Wanganui Trotting Club, which usually races prior to the Hawera fixture, will hold its annual meeting this year on April 11 and 13, thus concluding the circuit opened at Hawera and continued at New Plymouth. For some reason or other the Wanganui Club in the past has not enjoyed the measure of success it is entitled to. It may be that the people of the River City are more allied to the sister sport of galloping, but at the same time the light-harness business does not receive a great deal of publicity in Wanganui, which acts as a set-back to its progress. This year the club received a further set-back in being compelled to race after the Taranaki fixture. With a meeting before Hawera, the circuit was made much more convenient for owners and trainers from the Auckland end, and as a good deal of support was always forthcoming in this direction, it is unfortunate for the Wanganui enthusiasts that Northerners are asked to double back after the New Plymouth function.
Despite this disadvantage the club has submitted a programme that will appeal to a large number from this province, and this being the case Auckland sportsmen will put up with the transport inconvenience the club attendance on the Wanganui racecourse again this year.
Mr. C. S. Swan has been appointed secretary, and will do everything in his power, backed up by a strong committee, for. the comfort of visitors. Nominations for all events close on Tuesday next, March 26, at 5 p.m.; handicaps will be issued on Wednesday, April 3, while acceptances will be received on Friday, April 5. TE AROHA CLUB FIXTURE ON APRIL 20 GOOD TROTTING SCHEDULE INCREASE IN PRIZE MONEY With the Hawera-Taranaki - Wanganui fixtures out of the way, the Te Aroha Trotting Club’s annual meeting will be the next to attract attention, and the country organisation having arranged an interesting card for April 20, it should prove a big draw for those engaged in the sport in the Auckland Province, besides encouraging owners from other localities to be in attendance.
The Te Aroha Trotting Club, which is one of the most popular organisations in the Auckland Province, has made such good progress in the past that the executive this year decided upon a scheme of advancement by, firstly, increasing the stages, and, secondly, decreasing the limits. With the exception of the Hot Springs Handicap, every event has been tightened up on an average of two seconds, while that of the Novice Trot has been re-, duced from 3.51 to 3.45. An all-round prize increase is scheduled, the cup, ‘Which last year was valued at £3lO, including a £SO trophy, being worth £365. Owners, trainers and the general public will appreciate the progressive policy adopted by the Te Aroha Club, whose ambitious move will no doubt be reflected successfully in the entry and acceptance lists, while the racing should prove the best ever I witnessed on the local track. The latest and commendable venture of the Te Aroha trotting stalwarts should also further enhance the club’s claim to an additional permit, and when such an event comes to pass it can be confidently anticipated that a two-day fixture of high-class proportions will be staged.
Mr. G. A. Bush is the energetic secretary of the Te Aroha organisation, and will receive entries for all events on Wednesday, April 3. .For the convenience of Aucklanders, Blomfield and Co.. High Street, will accept nominations. The Schedule The figures given in parentheses represent the prize money and limits on last year’s card: Waitoa Handicap, of £l2O (£100), limit, 3.38 (3.40); li miles. Elstow Handicap, of £IOO (£75), limit 3.45 (3.51); 1£ miles. For unhoppled trotters only. Manawaru Handicap of £l3O (£100). limit 4.48 (4.50); 2 miles. TARANAKI TROTTING
ANNUAL FIXTURE
SATURDAY APRIL 6 The fifth totalisator meeting under the auspices of the Taranaki Trotting Club will be held on the New Plymouth racecourse on Saturday, April 6 and the card, as usual, will prove attractive to Auckland provincial owners and trainers. The sport has made good strides in New Plymouth since the club received a. totalisator permit, and the members of the Taranaki light harness organisation have used their best endeavours to assist with its progress. Being able to secure a suitable date, following on a week after the Hawera carnival, the club is indeed fortunate while the arrangements are highly satisfactory for owners and trainers, and particularly for those from the Auckland area. Transport facilities are ar-
ranged each year to suit the convenience of visitors, while the schedule drawn up cannot fail to attract those keenly interested in the pastime. The committee, with Mr. D. He C. Morgan, in the role of secretary, shares no pains in catering for the requirements of patrons, and everything points to the 1929 function being a huge success. Nominations for all events close on Tuesday next, March 26, at 9.30 p.m., and Han dicapper G. Paul will announce his adjustments on Tuesday, April 2 after the Hawera fixture, while acceptances will be received by Mr. Morgan the following day, Wednesday, April 3.
The Card Novice Handicap, of £105; 3.45 limit: 13 miles; for horses that have not won at better than 2.2 G at time of nomination. Waitara Handicap, of £115; 3.55 limit; li miles; for unhoppled trotters only. Urenui Handicap, of £115; 4.55 limit; 2 miles Taranaki Cup, of £3OO and cup valued at £25; 4.44 limit; 2 miles. Moturoa Handicap, of £115; 2.24 limit; 1 mile. Inglewood Handicap, of £140; 5.2 limit; 2 miles; for unhoppled trotters only. Omata Handicap, of £120; 3.39 limit; li miles. Farewell Handicap, of £140; 2.55 limit; 1.4 miles. Not Quite Right All is not well with Goldman, if his effort on Saturday can be taken as a criterion. With Geo. Webb in the sulky the Gold Bell gelding was sent over the Thames Cup distance, and While he put in good work and dash on the straight stretches, he tangled badly on the bends. The hard tracks may be affecting the old chap, and he may do a lot better when the sting is out of the ground.
