20,000 HOMELESS

ALABAMA FLOOD MISERY PRIVATION, DISEASE, DEATH (Australian and "N.Z. Press Association) NEW YORK, Monday. Despatches from Troy, Alabama, state that 20,000 persons have been rendered homeless in that State and in Florida as a result of the floods. The total death-roll is not yet known. The damage is estimated at more than £3,000,000. The swollen rivers are gradually subsiding in most places, leaving behind them scenes of utter desolation. Stories of suffering, misery, privation, disease and death are beginning to come to hand in the rescue camps. The Red Cross and other organisations are working at high pressure in aid of the refugees. Airmen are dropping food, medical supplies and serums in .districts where it is impossible for airplanes to alight. The National Guard is in control of the flooded areas. The town of Elba has been wiped off the map according to refugees and the town of Geneva is practically in as bad a condition. Guardsmen are hurrying to remove or destroy the carcases of cattle, dogs, pigs and other animals which were drowned in large numbers.
