MAKE IT HOBSON PARK!

THE most feasible way of adding a substantial area to the playgrounds of Auckland is the reclamation of the portion of Hobson Bay lying inside the sewer pipe-line. At present it is a mangrove swamp, unsightly and unwholesome at low tide, and of little use for boating, even at high water. Pilling in would provide attractively situated playing fields for cricketers, footballers and tennis enthusiasts in one of the most beautiful suburbs of Auckland. The project is one that should commend itself particularly to the Auckland Tennis Association. Hundreds of young tennis players are growing up and the provision of courts for school tournaments is already a problem. Auckland has outgrown Stanley Street, which is altogether inadequate for staging a New Zealand tennis championship meeting, and the question of a new location must be faced before many years are past. There does not appear to be any good reason why the City Council should not negotiate with the Harbour Board with a view to having this area ear-marked for sports purposes. The cost of the reclamation will be considerable, brit the work could proceed piece-meal as funds and circumstances permitted. AVlien completed the city would have a playground to be proud of and one that would be a boon to further generations of Aucklanders.
