LOW SPEED LIMIT
20 M.P.H. ON HAURAKI PLAINS The A.A.A. recently lodged an objection with the Minister of Public Works regarding the application of the Hauraki Plains County Council for permission to impose a local restriction 20 m.p.h. in six townships. It was pointed out that the general limit of 25 m.p.h. was sufficient for many large boroughs, while cities such as Auckland recognised the necessity for speeding up traffic, and 30 m.p.h. was the recognised maximum of the concrete roads. The A.A.A. has now received the county's arguments in support of the low limit. The county claims that the roads affected are generally bounded by deep drains allowing no latitude for cars which leave the running surface of the highway. It is stated that no hardship would be caused, since in only one of the six cases is the restriction operative over more than half a mile. The county also urges that foundations of the roads are not solid and are accordingly not intended to stand up to the wearing effects of very fast traffic. The A.A.A. has referred the county’s points to a committee.
