EASTER CLASSIC
VARSITY ROWING EVENT AUCKLAND CREW CHOSEN EIGHTS TO RACE AT LYTTELTON Auckland University College eight-oar crew, to race at Easter in the first Varsity boat race in which all four of the universities or colleges will participate, has been chosen after an extensive series of trials. Though composition, of the crew as set out below is definite, placings may yet be subject to readjustment. S. McCallum, of the North Shore Club, replaces K. Ross, last year’s stroke, who was not available for selection. The crew as boated last night is: McCallum (str.), L. E. Brooker (7), J. Blakey (6), W. J. Lowe (5), C. T. Keegan (4), J. K. Hunn (3), F. Moore (2), G. Field (bow). Otago, Victoria, Canterbury and Auckland Universities will all row in the race, which is to be held in conjunction with the inter-Varsity sports at Christchurch at Easter, and as this is the first occasion on which all have entered crews, the fixture is of classic interest. Both the races held to date have been confined to Victoria and Auckland, the former winning on- each occasion. The Auckland boat swamped on the Waitemata when the first race was rowed in 1927, but Victoria, which had a fine crew, including the Rhodes Scholar, J. PlattsMills, won easily in the re-row. Last year, when the race was rowed at Petone, Victoria won again. The Auckland boat this time includes four new men, the crew averaging about 111 stone, which appears to be lighter than last year. C. G. Fearon, of the Waitemata Club, is in charge of the training arrangements, and the crew is in steady work.
