ROADS IN FRANKLIN AND MANUKAU MINISTERIAL PARTY’S TOUR (Special to THE SUN) KAIAUA, Monday. After meeting a deputation at Otahuliu yesterday the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, continued to Kaiaua, via Pokeno, Mangatawhiri and Mangatangi. He was accompanied by Messrs. J. N. Massey, M.P., A. W. Hall, M.P., and A. M. Samuel, M.P. At Kaiaua the Minister was asked for assistance to continue the road along the Firth of Thames. Mr. Massey said Franklin was spending a grant of £1,470 on the road, but it would stop over a mile short of the county boundary. A number of settlers who wanted access to their holdings by getting the road extended into the Manukau County offered £2OO toward the cost. Indicating the difficulties under which settlers worked Mr. W. C. England said two settlers had to sledge their cream along the beacli at low tide, and the beach practically was impassable at any time. A large deputation from Miranda, Kaiaua, and Wharekawa districts asked for assistance in finishing the metalling of the Mangatangi-Miranda and Miranda-Waitakaruru roads, and continuing the Kaiaua-Wharekawa road. The Minister said it was now quite clear that light land was capable of successful farming by top-dressing and other scientific methods. Reading should precede settlement, and the relief of unemployment could be accomplished by reproductive work such as roading idle country and taking the first step in breaking it in. Such a policy would lead to a greater and greater increase in the Dominion’s annual productivity, and it was his aim to accomplish this by doing whatever lay in the power of his department to do. There were difficulties, but he felt they could be overcome. His sympathy was entirely with the backblocks settlers. They should be given the same facilities as those nearer the towns. He was making liis present tour to become acquainted with their needs, and it would then be his endeavour to meet them in order of urgency. -
