CROQUET CHAMPIONSHIP
PRESENTATION OF SHIELD ONEHUNGA CLUBS FEAT The Auckland Croquet Associations new shield records the names of the winning clubs since the metropolitan competitions were inaugurated in 19ro. In that year the Ponsonby Club won the championship, but from 1921 t<. 1929 .inclusive, the Onehunga Club appears in an unbeaten record. On Saturday afternoon, bowling ani croquet was suspended on the Onehunga greens while Air. Rober Buchanan, president of the combined clubs, presented the shield to the winning team. He explained that until this season the Croquet Association ba ! presented a pennant to the winnin; club, but the number of pennants wo. by the Onehunga Club had outgrown the lentgh of the original flagstaff. Mr. Stephen Westncy, one of the oldest •: the Onehunga bowlers, had, lioweve. come to the rescue by presenting ti croquet club with a flagpole of suffic - cnt length to accommodate the who of the flags, which were regular flown on Saturdays and gala days. Air. Buchanan also mentioned that the achievement of the croquet club n winning the championship for thninth successive year constituted tisecond world’s record for Onehunga. Onehunga was the first municipality in the world to have a Alayoress, wh-'r some years ago Airs. Yates was elect:; to that position.
Mrs. C. J. Schnauer. president of tv* Onehunga Croquet Club, in acceptin',* the new shield, ascribed the long continued success of the club to the U r ' that it had the only team in the senior competition whose members were a!! on the scratch mark.
