ROYAL DOULTON AT LAST
WINS OHINEMURI CUP ;> ] FIRST DAY AT PAEROA ; (Special to THE iSL'Xj PAEROA, Saturday. Fine weather and a large attendance ensured the success of the Ohine- < tnuri Jockey Club’s 1. 1 % Ting at Paeroa to-day. ' The amount handled by the machine ; : during the day was assessed at £30,407 ! 10s. and this, in comparison with ; £32,833 on the corresponding day last year, shows a decrease of £2,425 10s. ! Details of the racing are as follow: HANDICAP HURDLES The Potoanui-Highflown bracket, C 760, was made first choice in the hurdle handicap, with Odin, £625, and ■ Berinthia, £519, next in demand. Ah Wera, carrying only 77i tickets, eventually proved the winner, and returned his supporters a price in the vicinity 1 of a third of a century. Highflown was the first to show out, | and led past the stand from Terrapeen, ; Ah Wera, Berinthia, Odin, Kaihoremai, ; Potoanui, Uralla. At the six furlong post Berinthia lost her rider, and a Lurlong further on Ah Wera, Highflown and Terrapeen were in line, followed by Potoanui, Odin, Komak, and Uralla. Crossing the top, Ah Wera drew clear, and had a lead of six | lengths from Highflown at the home j turn, with Potoanui, Odin, and Komak | doing best of the remainder. The | leader was not troubled to win comj fortably by three lengths from Potoa- | nui, with Odin two lengths back third, j Then came I-lighflown, Komak, Terrapeen. Uralla, Kaihoremai, Waipu, and . Ramblin’ Kid. KARANGAHAKE HANDICAP j Norval Tea was the only course j withdrawal for the Karangahake Han- . dicap, and most money was found for the top-weight, Awamutu, who carried £717, as against Pellette, £547, and Love Call, £ 505. When the field had settled down, Valstreet was at the head of affairs, with Awamutu, Pellette, Rose Lupin, and Currajong following. Awamutu soon ran to the front, however, and at the end of three furlongs was leading Valstreet, Peli lette, Rose Lupin, and Love Call. Valstreet ran up to Awamutu nearing the turn, and this pair led round the bend j on terms, Pellette and Rose Lupin folj lowing together. When straightened j up, Pellette simply played with the i field, and won in convincing fashion I by four lengths from Awamutu, who was a further three-quarters of a I length ahead of Valstreet. Rose Lupin I was fourth, and, straggling after her, I were Love Call, Currajong, and Flying Prince. NOVICE HANDICAP Horses of all sizes and shapes were | seen out for the Novice Handicap, and j the public choice was Just Nell, G. ! Paul’s representative, £sll. Hiata, \ £469, was a sound second choice, with a drop to The Jackjumper, £270, a , good return being the reward of followers of this horse. It was a grand start, and King Fiend was the only one who did not move away. Shortly after the start, Haviland, Land Meas- ; ure, L.ady Mestor, and r oving Cup • j were bunched in that older, followed i | by Swift Light, Camp Prince, Leona, • and Pae Ana. Haviland had a shade | the best of matters turning for home, ! and his nearest attendants were Land Measure, Thanks, Swift Light (off the course), Just Nell, The Jackjumper, and Camp Prince. The Jackjumper | came fast over the last bit, and won , well by half a length. Haviland and ! Loving Cup had a great set-to over the final 100 yards, and though Havii land appeared to have beaten Loving I Cup for second money, the judge ignored both of them, placing Camp Prince second by a neck, and Loving Cup third. Night Comet was fourth, followed by Whakama. Just Nell, Liona, Land Measure, Swift Light, King Leslie, and Camp Prince (officially second). OHINEMURI CUP
| The pen was put through Ohine- : muri’s name in the Ohinemuri Gold Cup, and in the small field of seven the favourites were Desert Glow £1,035, The Lover £970, and Royal Doulton £BOB. The field got away to a splendid start, Glen Star leading out from Maori Boy, Flying Juliet, Royal Doulton, The Dover and Desert Glow. Passing the stand Glen Star, Maori Boy and Flying Juliet were together, with Desert Glow and The Lover right up, and a gap of six lengths back to Royal Doulton and Queen Arch Glen Star was still at the head of affairs going down the back, attended by Flying Juliet, Maori Boy, Desert Glow and The Lover, with the other two well back. The field bunched crossing the top, and Glen Star and Maori Boy together) were the first to turn for home ahead of Flying Juliet, Desert Glow, The Lover, Queen Arch and Royal Doulton. The favourite was in front at the distance, but Royal Doulton came with a great dash and beat him by a neck. Only half a length further back was Queen Arch, who ran a sound race. Glen Star was fourth, and after him came The Lover, Maori Boy and Flying Juliet. The winner put up a fine performance. KOMATA HANDICAP A double-figure return went to backers who supported Whaka King in il» Komata Handicap. The King Lupin gelding carried only £203, better backed ones being Mussie £751, and Indolent £541, first and second favourites respectively. Envoy’s figures were announced as £l5B. Unoco was first prominent as the result of a straggling dispatch, and led Grand Tea, Whaka King, Quinsilia, Envoy, Flapperette, Te Money and Mussie. Moving down the back" Unoco gave way to Whaka King and Grand Tea, this pair being clear of the field. Grand Tea weakened nearing the turn and allowed Unoco to join Whaka King in the van. these two horses leading into the home stretch four lengths clear of Envoy. Grand Tea, Indolent, Flapperette and Te Money. There was no doubt as to Whaka King’s superiority in the run home, and he won nicely by half a length from Envoy, who only secured second place through the third horse, Unoco, running about in the straight. Indolent was fourth, and at intervals came Len, Te Money, Flapperette, Grand Tea, Orclius and Mussie. ST. PATRICK’S HANDICAP Awarere, £942, and Ruffles, £626, were the choice of backers in the St. Patrick’s Handicap, but neither returned a dividend. Takutama carried £154. King Lu was the early leader from Takutama, Subdivision, Ruffles, Awarere and Billikins, but at the end of a couple of furlongs Subdivision had run to the front to lead Green Bonnet, Takutama, Awarere. Ruffles, Billikins and Marble King. SubdlvI ision still had a slight call over Green Bonnet across the top and into the ! straight, and at that stage of the journey was leading Awarere, Takutama, Ruffles. Marble King and Lady’s Boy. | The pacemaker stayed on well in the run to the judge, to win convincingly ;by three lengths from the outsider, ! Takutama. who beat Ruffles by a ! similar distance. After this trio came King Lu, Awarere, Lady’s Boy. Value. Green Bonnet. Marble King and Atapal. McGUIRE STEEPLES
Star of the East £7S4 was a firm favourite for the McGuire Steeples, but there was plenty of money for Mashoor, who had invested on him £552. Penden nis was supported to the extent of £3SS, and the second horse £236. Pendennis made the early running, but at the stand double Star of The East had charge from Pendennis, Mangaiti,
Mashoor. Master Arch and Roman j Abbey. There was no material alter- j ition as they raced along the back, but star of The East was out two lengths dear of Pendennis, who was a similar margin ahead of Mashoor. Master Arch ind Roman Abbey. Crossing the top Pendennis ran up to the leader, and this pair took the last fence together, with Master Arch coming fast. Once over, Pendennis went on to win nicely by a length from Master Arch, who beat the tiring Star of The East by two lengths. At different stages of the journey Mangaiti fell; Law’s Road ran off, and Rawepoti lost his rider. -Mangaiti broke his back when he fell, and as the result of a nasty-looking spill S. Henderson had to be removed to the hospital, apparently badly hurt. NETHERTON HANIDICAP Hakanoa was a firm favourite for the Xetherton Handicap, with good support for The Thorn and Ohinemuri. The Thorn was the early leader from Ohinemuri, Auriculus and Hakanoa. Nearing the top Ohinemuri had charge, closely followed by Auriculus, Hakanoa and Star Comet, and that was the order in which they turned for home. Hakanoa challenged Ohinemuri at the distance, but failed to reach the leader by half a length. Auriculus was threeparts of a length back third, followed by Serang. Star Comet and The Thorn.
