QUEENIE McGURKUS

Let me introduce now Little Queenie McGurkus, Who longed to perform In a travelling circus; When she ventured abroad With the motor horns blaring She rose to great heights Of astuteness and daring.

But the town was so small That no one ever came With a bagful of guineas. Or offers of fame, Or even a palfrey For Queenie to ride, So all her ambitions Were daily denied Till she met the new baker Who drove a red cart, And the horse in the shafts. Had a kind sort of heart; He felt sorry for Queenie And begged her to mount, When the baker was busy With two loaves to count. Then he posed for this picture. (His forelegs are neat. And don’t you think Queenie Astride him looks sweet?)
